A scientific report commissioned by the US government has concluded
there is "clear evidence" of climate change caused by human activities.
The report, from the federal Climate Change Science Program, said trends
seen over the last 50 years "cannot be explained by natural processes alone".

In a touch of irony, the Canadian (Tory) minority government

<http://www.climateark.org/articles/reader.asp?linkid=55834>
2006/05/02: ClimateArk: Canada to play merely "ceremonial" role at key climate negotiations
Canada's role in UN negotiations on climate change appears to be shrinking in response
to the Conservative government's mixed messages about the Kyoto Protocol. Environment
Minister Rona Ambrose will officially serve as president of the UN Kyoto talks to take place
May 15-26 in Bonn, but her role will be much reduced from that played by former environment
minister Stephane Dion at the last round of Kyoto talks in Montreal. Unlike Dion,
who spent a year rallying support for the Montreal climate conference last year and
personally led the talks, Ambrose is expected to play an insignificant role
in practical terms. "The role of the president of the COP
(Conference of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol) is . . . largely ceremonial," said John Hay,
spokesman for United Nations Climate Change Secretariat in Geneva.
"The president makes some administrative decisions, but these are process-related and
not highly political. In Bonn, Minister Ambrose will open the proceedings and chair
a bureau meeting. She is scheduled to leave the same day."

2006/05/02: EurActiv: Crashing carbon prices puts EU climate policy to the test
Reports that six EU countries had emitted far less CO2 than anticipated sent
carbon prices plummeting last week. Attention now turns to the EU's next round
of emission allocation plans due on 30 June.

Power firms could make a £1bn windfall profit from
the EU Carbon Emissions Trading Scheme, BBC News has learned.
The windfall is likely because many firms have benefited from
increases in electricity prices brought about by the scheme
without needing to make any extra investment in return.

Three quarters of the UK population would support a new law aimed at

Some 1,233 people were asked if they would back a law requiring annual

more than 53 percent of mainstream news articles covering the topic did.
So, where's the disconnect between scientific fact, media coverage and readership interest?

The thought uppermost in my mind was how odd it is that non-scientists
think of science as being about certainties and absolute truth. Whereas
scientists are actually quite tentative - they simply try to arrive at
the best fit between the experimental findings so far and a general principle.
