Anne and I went to see Aftersun again last night. Think I had hoped to pick up a bit more information about the father and daughter, but don’t think we did, and both left the cinema more sad about two people destined to never really know each other.
For me the power of the film lay in what I call ‘subtraction’, which is the skill of making less greater than more. We were never told much about the main characters, and what little was gleaned was therefore more carefully scrutinised allowing for any number of personal interpretations. Superb acting and direction again made the viewing worthwhile. The film also highlighted the importance of photography in creating more reliable memories than would otherwise be possible.
Aftersun will be on my list of best films of the year, but need to give that a bit more thought.
