HI all,

as we have a few films now confirmed (but not on sale yet) for January and February -- Corsage, Enys Men, Saint Omer, EO -- are there any films that you may have read about that you'd like as a Monday Night film?

We've had a couple of requests for Luca Guadagnino's new film  Bones and All, described as a 'teen cannibal romance by the Guardian (#14 in their films of 2022).

No requests at all for Rimini - an 18 rated film about an aging popstar, the reviews are good despite the main character not being a pleasant person at all!

Lynch / Oz - a documentary concerning the influence of the 1939 film The Wizard Of Oz on the work of film-maker David Lynch.

Rashomon - a BFI re-release of Kurosawa's drama in which the events of a crime are recalled from multiple different perspectives. Ranked =41st in Sight and Sound's 2022 poll of the greatest films ever made.

Babylon, the new film from Damien Chazelle (La La Land, First Man, Whiplash, all Monday films in the past) is a drama charting the lives of four people working in Hollywood during the late 1920s. It's polarised the critics -- never a bad thing --- but it's over 3 hours long.

Any suggestions just let us know.

Hi John

Sad to have missed the last few weeks due to work, but hopefully will be back this coming Monday.

Would love to see Rashomon, a long overdue bind spot for me.

Saint Omer would have been a suggestion of mine, so pleased to see it on the slate.

Some other suggestions:
Tar - assume Blanchett is going to get at least an oscar nom for this.
Dry Ground Burning
A Room of my Own
Blue Jean
(I don't know if those three have all been and gone?)
I wonder how much interest I can drum up for Magic Mike's Last Dance? I'm only half joking!

Thanks

Alex

Hello Alex,

great to hear from you. Must admit at being a wee bit concerned at your absence lately. Hopefully you will have caught up with Decision to Leave on MUBI by now?

I forgot to mention we will be getting both Tar and Blue Jean. One of the RBC staff will introduce the latter having attended demos against Clause 28 back in the 80s! And Connor has kindly agreed to introduce both Corsage and Tar. We're hoping to get Close as well, a really beautiful French film about the friendship between two teenage boys.

No release date as yet for Dry Ground Burning or A Room of my Own.

Magic Mike's Last Dance you say? We've had a request for the film by a group of young women who hired the cinema to watch part I last year (absolute and total bedlam) and part II last month (better behaved).

Thanks,

John

Steven Soderbergh returning to direct part 3 as well!
Part 2 was one of my favourite films of 2015.

I will certainly be attending one of the many showings I assume you'll be putting on when it arrives

Still not caught up on DTL yet. Maybe this week if I get a moment.

Hi John

Is it too soon to ask for Darren Aronofsky's Whale?
He's one of my favourite directors and I would love to introduce it if we can get it and if no one minds.
I'm looking forward to another excellent season - looks like an even better one, I think!
Julie

PS Not keen on 3-hour long films without an intermission...

Just back from Lincoln and had a visit to the fabulous  Kinema in the Woods which still maintains the practice of having an intermission at every performance :)

I saw Matilda with our 8yr old grandson. A great family film, but suspect Alec wouldn't have enjoyed it (not a musical fan).

The cinema has such a sense of history - still back projection and has been open since 1922!

What a lovely way to spend a day! Films and youngsters, the best mix for a day out :- )
And the cinema looks great, I love a place with a bit of history (just like our very own RBC)

Hello John

Another few suggestions from the McMorran household (i.e., Connor this time)
Peter Von Kant - Francois Ozon
Holy Spider - Ali Abbasi (who directed Border)
Broker (Hirokazu Kore-eda)

Hope this helps/doesn't muddy the water too much

Julie

HI,

thanks Julie. We may have missed the boat on Peter Von Kant (or rather, there's little room in the programme for it as it's out soon).
Holy Spider is very likely whereas Broker is guaranteed as it's from Kore-eda (who's very popular here!).

And thanks for Connor's input!

We heard from an independent cinema in Scotland who had their showings of a Marvel title pulled by Disney after they screened the 3-hour long film with an intermission! I wonder if permission is required for all Kinema's films? We informed Universal when we showed Mrs Harris Goes to Paris with a 10-minute break last month just so we wouldn't get in any trouble.

BTW Julie,  Tár is 2 hours 38 minutes long....

Hi John
:- ) That's okay (re intermissions). Triangle of Sadness was about 2.5 hours and it didn't feel like it, so I'm probably overreacting! I think Tar will be quite gripping so the 2hrs 38 should whizz by.
Damien Chazelle is a great director - and then there's Brad, of course!

Hello all

Just watched Red Rocket which I thought was fantastic. So no problem with unpleasent people with me, bring Rimini on!. Not that interested in cannabalism particularly despite liking most horror so not that interested in Bones and all.
Yes
Holy Spider
Utama
Happening if possible
No
Bones and all
documentary on Wizard of Oz/Lynch.
Happy with whatever you choose tho.
Confirm I will introduce Enys men and St Omer tho it will be 5 mins with a bit of paper😊😊

HI Steve,

thanks for the feedback. I'm not keen on Bones and All but we've had a few requests for it so we'll try and fit it elsewhere in the schedule.
We showed Utama just the other week so it won't be back. Happening is a good choice, we thought about it for the summer Monday Night selection but went with the levity of Brian and Charles instead!

Holy Spider is a yes.

Hope you and the family enjoyed Aftersun last night!

Cheers,

John

Yes we did, Kerry particularly so. Her insights opened it up for me as well.
How about
Godland
Showing Up (which I would introduce as I love all her films)

Hi Steve,

Godland is a certainty, I watched roughly 40 minutes of it earlier in the year, enough for me to switch off the laptop and wait to see the remainder on the big screen.
Showing Up isn't, er, showing up on the release schedule but I'm sure it's not too far off now.

Cheers,

John
