Hi all,

just some updates for the Monday Night films.

Alex - sorry no Blue Jean for a Monday as we had Saint Omer for that week.

Upcoming and new Additions:

Holy Spider - Mon 13 March - I'm happy to introduce that as I also introduced the director's previous film Border.

Broker - Mon 20 March - Alec is happy to introduce Kore-eda's new film

TBC - Mon 27 March - possibly an Italian film called Nostalgia, or we could bring back Women Talking (which we're showing 17/18 March), lots of great reviews.

Close - Mon 03 April - wonderful drama about the relationship between two teenage boys.

Mon 10 April CLOSED Easter Monday

TBC - Mon 17 April, hoping to get Full Time,  a French film which plays out like a thriller, Laura Calamy plays a woman who finally gets an interview for a job where she can raise her children better only to run into a national transit strike.

Fear Eats the Soul - Mon 24 April - Steve are you happy with this date?

Mon 1 May CLOSED Public Monday

Godland - Mon 8 May, In the late 19th century, a young Danish priest travels to a remote part of Iceland to build a church and photograph its people.

After that we're open to suggestions! Thanks for your input all very much appreciated.

Best,

John

Hi John

Message from Connor: Pearl and infinity Pool please. He's happy to introduce them.

And from me:

I'm happy to do one of the others mentioned below once everyone else has had their picks - I have no preference or dislike of any of them and am happy to just fill in as needed. I'm looking forward to doing the Whale. I wasn't happy with my Intro last night - The Whale one will be much more focused .

Last night's EO was interesting but I'm still getting my head around it. No one really 'enjoyed it' but some appreciated what he was trying to do and liked the visual effects, sound and editing. I had a lot of problems with it regarding the animals, as did many of the audience. I liked Skolimowski's motives, but I don't think he pulled it off and there were definitely elements of cruelty on screen, scenes which I'm sure were not computer generated - especially, for me, the last scene. That was one very frightened and distressed donkey! interestingly, we discussed anthropomorphism and that we don't really know what the donkey is thinking/why he is acting that way from our human perspective, however, behavioural displays of emotion (as in that last scene) are obviously telling us the donkey is unhappy with what's happening to him. That donkey should never have been put in that situation.

I think the film as a whole left some quite mystified!  In my opinion, he tried to do too much with it because he had so many issues he wanted to highlight. At nearly 85, perhaps he sees it as his director swansong? He takes a few years between films and said this one has a youthful element to it because of the average age of the people with whom he collaborated. Will he retire from directing now? Perhaps. I see there is another film in the pipeline - The Palace, one he and Ewa have written with Polanski, but no more directing forthcoming on IMDB just yet, as Polanski is directing that one. We'll see, I guess.

Julie

Hi John

A second nomination from me for Infinity Pool! Not sure on Pearl as I don't know how much discussion it will engender. It's really looks like just a standard slasher origin story. Albeit a well made one. (I thought the first film in the series, X was really great but wouldn't have suggested it for a film club night.) But I'm sure Connor would provide some good discussion/insight either way.

Is the 8th not going to be a bank holiday as well? Happy to introduce Godland either way.

A couple of films that are on my radar and might be good for film club are All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt and Alcarras, though suspect these will be out much later in the year. Is The Eternal Daughter coming at all?

Julie, thanks for your intro on EO. Sorry I had to go but I really found the final scenes really quite upsetting and didn't really want to get into a full discussion on it right then and there
I personally thought it was an excellent film though with similar reservations to you. You'd like to feel the animals were all kept safe and happy throughout but it's hard to believe they got those shots at the end without the donkey being in at least some distress. Of course the thing that stuck with me was why should I feel worse for the donkey than the poor cows as they went through exactly the same thing. I assume that was the thing he was trying to poke us with (it certainly worked on me.) Some of the cinematography was fantastic though.

Well at least we have a nice cheery film about infanticide next week.....

Hi Alex

Ah, yes, I'm sure that's why he did the last scene how he did, to encourage a penny-dropping speciesism moment!

My 'moment' was a lamb chop on my plate when I was 12 years old, and my dog Prince was sitting next to me with his head on my lap. I'm sure he was begging for said chop but looking at him and thinking 'what's the difference' was something that changed so many of the subsequent choices in my life. This was much to the frustration of my poor mum, who thought it was all a phase! From her little angel, I'd suddenly become the difficult child who, a few years later, would give her nightmares as I went off with my placard on protests all over the country. They were mostly animal-related, but I think my weekend protesting at Greenham Common just about finished her off! Decades later, at the age of 70,  she had her own penny dropping moment (and I felt just a little vindicated ;- ) )

And next week's film - I know, we do like to cheer ourselves up on Mondays, don't we? I do, however, love a courtroom drama! I think it will be an interesting film - the trailer is good.

Julie

Hi Alex,

ah we missed the boat on Alcarras, we should have booked it. It's on Mubi from tomorrow.
There isn't a release date for either The Eternal Daughter or All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt yet. Presumably the Joanna Hogg film will get a lot of publicity in the run up to release though.
Just found out that the French film Full Time has been put back to later in the year so we'll add Joyland to the Monday Night schedule.

Infinity Pool should be interesting, one tweet earlier today mentioned, "Messy, f*cked up, sometimes stupid but - most importantly - never incoherent. Funny too."

You're right about the 8th of May Bank holiday, forgot about that. Happy to move Godland to the following week if everyone has other plans that day.

And regarding your choice from the Sight and Sound Top 100 we can get a licence to show In The Mood For Love if you'd like. Let us know, no hurry on that.

Thanks,

John

Hi Julie,

that's great. I like to the sound of your mum's penny-dropping moment, what was it??

Thanks also for the EO introduction. I didn't stay for the film as I didn't want to have another coughing fit. I'd like to have watched the film but anything which features animals in distress I find incredibly upsetting. For that reason I haven't watched Cow or finished Gunda.

We'll try and get something a bit lighter for a Monday!

Hi John

It was something she saw on a daytime TV programme to do with pigs and is probably a bit too graphic to describe here, but it changed the way she looked at things (and her shopping habits) for the rest of her life.

The occasional lighter one would be nice :- )

I'd be happy to have a film on the 8th but didn't know if you guys always closed on BHs

In the Mood for Love would be great!

HI Alex,

that's great. We can discuss a suitable date and time - no need for an introduction unless you really want to -  just a few lines about your choice for our programme and social media if that's alright. Connor has selected Stalker which we'd like to put on at the end of March (Julie - if that suits Connor alright? I emailed him earlier). Maybe if we start to promote these at 'Film Club Presents...' or something similar. It would be good for everyone's hard work to be noticed beyond Monday nights.

I'm happy for 8th May to go ahead if there's sufficient interest. We can discuss next week?

Thanks,

John

My dad took me to a slaughterhouse when I was a wee boy (it was part of his work). It didn't put me off meat at the time but I struggled with the sheer terror the animals faced in their final moments. Then I watched 'Kes' thinking it was family friendly fare.....

As for a lighter film, this one might be completely off the wall for a Monday, it's a comedy called Champions from one half of the Farrelly Brothers (Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary). Reason why we're looking to book it a) it looks fun and a riff on the brothers' film Kingpin and b) the Farrellys use actors with physical or learning disabilities as key characters in their films to champion inclusivity -  (1) CHAMPIONS - Official Trailer [HD] - Only In Theaters March 10 - YouTube

Absolutely no worries if you don't feel it's suitable for a Monday, it's quite a leap from Infinity Pool to Champions! I think it'll be included elsewhere in our programme.

Hi John
Gosh, a slaughterhouse - I thankfully managed to avoid them throughout my career!
And then Kes, gosh, that's a film you only want to see once in a lifetime!
... and those poor lads in Kes being caned for real - so brutal!

Happy for 8th May, too, if it's going ahead.
I think Con's replied separately to you for his bit of the message, John.
