  Hi all,

I hope you're all well.

Here's a list of the new films, 7 to begin with (so if you buy 6 get the 7th free).

SMOKING CAUSES COUGHING, nicely bizarre French comedy featuring the exploits of Tobacco Force - Mon 18 September

PLAN 75, Japanese drama about a govt plan to encourage senior citizens to be euthanized to remedy an aged society - Mon 25 September

SCRAPPER, comedy-drama about a 12-year-old girl who lives happily alone in her London flat, until her estranged father turns up - Mon 2 October

PAST LIVES, drama about the reunion between two childhood friends as they contemplate their relationship and their own lives - Mon 9 October
THE OLD OAK, Ken Loach drama about the only remaining public meeting space in a former mining community that has now fallen on hard times - Mon 16 October

TWILIGHT, a long-lost Hungarian drama originally released in 1990 -- and newly restored -- about a seasoned detective who investigates a series of child murders - Mon 23 October

PARIS MEMORIES, French drama about a woman traumatized after surviving a terrorist attack who is unable to recall the events of that night - Mon 30 October

If anyone would like to introduce one of the films just leave a comment below. The first two are already spoken for - Alex Banwell has kindly offered to introduce Smoking Causes Coughing. We have a lecturer from Glasgow Uni End of Life Studies group introducing Plan 75. I can do the ones that have no takers.

As time goes on we'll add more films here (the new Joanna Hogg film is already confirmed):

Best wishes,

John

Hi John and everyone

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to do the Twilight introduction on 23rd October - unless anyone else is keen. And I promise not to wear a 'Team Jacob' T-shirt (Connor's joke, not mine :- )).

By then I should have my hearing aid (at last!). This will help me A LOT with managing the post-film discussion as I do have some hearing loss - all those rock concerts, I'm sure. I know you said to me about the audience using microphones, however I'm not comfortable with microphones being passed around the audience for my benefit, given the possibility of viruses being transmitted in this way (not just Covid).

I would have loved to have introduced Past Lives too, but I think it will be too soon for me.

Best wishes to you all and see you for Smoking Causes Coughing (!!!) ... have seen Deerskin and very surprisingly (given the title) thought it was a great film!

Julie

PS I can hear the films without any problems and will just manage and go with the flow with the rest of it for now.
Have emailed you and Alex separately, John, about Film club member 'reserved' seat changes if poss. (I don't like being at the front).

Hi Julie,

no, go for the Team Jacob t-shirt (it took me a moment to get the meaning, maybe Team  Béla or Team Bella to confuse folks even more???). Thanks for introducing Twilight, I'm really looking forward to it.

No problem regarding the microphone. Maybe we can ask customers to move nearer the front of the cinema?

I hope you enjoyed Smoking Causes Coughing. As Alex mentioned last week comedy films are a rarity on Monday, maybe we should try some more bonkers French films. Such as The Empire, due out in 2024 -  Epic French Sci-Fi Movie 'L'Empire' from Bruno Dumont - First Trailer | FirstShowing.net

And considering this for the final film before Christmas (not exactly Christmas-y but there's snow and killer elves...!): There's Something in the Barn Teaser (bloody-disgusting.com)

Cheers,

John

Hi John

Both those films look good! It's nice to have some (killer) elves and a bit of snow around Christmas time :- )

Should be okay for introducing Twilight as my hearing aid appointment is two weeks before that, and the jury is still out on the T shirt...

Sorry we've not made it there tonight - we had planned on being there but should have left over half an hour ago. It's been one of those days and the dogs and exercising them has had to be a priority for this evening.

I hope it's a good film/discussion. I look forward to hearing about it.

See you soon
Julie

Hi Julie, no problem, it was a really interesting film and there was a very good discussion afterwards. Marian from the End of Life Studies Group was really engaging.

Yes, killer Elves should make it a nice festive showing...

Thanks,

John
