But who are Turbonegro? They are a band of misfits, rebels, and outcasts who have created their own unique identity and culture. They call themselves the "Kings of Deathpunk", a term they coined to describe their blend of glam rock, punk rock, and hard rock. They are known for their outrageous stage outfits, which include denim jackets, sailor caps, makeup, and fake mustaches. They are also known for their provocative and humorous lyrics, which often deal with topics like sex, drugs, violence, and rock and roll.
Turbonegro have gone through many lineup changes over the years, but the core members have remained the same since 1996. They are: Hank von Helvete (vocals), Happy-Tom (bass), Euroboy (lead guitar), Rune Rebellion (rhythm guitar), PÃl Pot Pamparius (keyboards/percussion), and Chris Summers (drums). Together, they have released 10 studio albums, including classics like Ass Cobra (1996), Apocalypse Dudes (1998), Scandinavian Leather (2003), and Party Animals (2005).
Turbonegro have also inspired a loyal and devoted fan base, known as the Turbojugend. The Turbojugend are organized into chapters all over the world, each with their own name and logo. They wear denim jackets with Turbonegro patches and badges, and often attend the band's concerts and events. The Turbojugend also organize their own festivals, called Welt-Turbojugend-Tage (World Turbojugend Days), where they meet other fans, party, and celebrate Turbonegro's music.
Turbonegro have received critical acclaim for their albums, especially Ass Cobra and Apocalypse Dudes, which are considered classics of the punk rock genre. Pitchfork gave both albums a 9.0 rating, praising their "wild and controversial" sound and aesthetic. AllMusic described Turbonegro as "one of the most entertaining and vital bands in rock & roll history", and called Apocalypse Dudes "the most important European record ever".
Turbonegro have also influenced many other bands, such as Queens of the Stone Age, HIM, The Dwarves, The Hives, The Darkness, Andrew W.K., and Danko Jones. Some of these bands have also contributed to tribute albums dedicated to Turbonegro, such as Alpha Motherfuckers (2001) and Small Feces (2003). Turbonegro have also collaborated with other artists, such as Peaches, Nick Oliveri, Jello Biafra, and David SandstrÃm.
Turbonegro are still active today, releasing new albums and touring the world. Their latest album, Rocknroll Machine, came out in 2018 and featured a more synth-driven sound. The band also celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2019 with a special show in Oslo. Turbonegro have proven that they are not only a band, but a phenomenon, a lifestyle, and a legend.
