Friends & Colleagues,
There's just 23 days left in our campaign to bring a new voice to the Hyattsville City Council and we have some great news to share.
First, I thank the Almighty for the contributions of my brother Omar and few of my closest friends, classmates, and colleagues. Together, we have raised over $5000 in the first few weeks of our campaign.
With these contributions we purchased a very nice ad for our local newspaper, produced our first round of palm cards and postcards, and hired a field director to direct our volunteers in going door to door with our message. We’ve also succeeded in getting businesses across my Ward, from one end of the city to the next to post our signs in their window.
Our campaign is already causing shivers within the small clique that controls politics in our city. As evidence of this, during our first meeting of the new Hyattsville Civic Association that I created, the Mayor along with a member of the City’s planning commission (spouse of the Councilman who was my competitor two years ago) dropped by.
Unfortunately, they did not come to support our fresh ideas of bringing residents and businesses together to improve our city. Instead, they seemed more interested in demanding that I hand over the names of our group’s membership and intimidating the other business leaders who attended the meeting.
However, this clique does not represent the majority in my ward.
Thus, this weekend we plan to take our message of change directly to our neighbors by knocking on at least half the doors in our Ward. That’s where you come in.
I call on you to spend some of your weekend with us.
We are working today through 4pm with the goal of knocking on 300 doors, half of the homes in my ward. On Sunday, we plan to meet up at 10am and work through 7pm in order to knock on the other half. Our meet up location both today and tomorrow is a local business in our ward, PostNet, at 5557 Baltimore Ave #500,Hyattsville, MD.
Volunteers can expect to meet other supporters, get door knocking assignments, and enjoy pastries, tea, and coffee. We ask each volunteer to commit to spending at least 3 hours that should allow them to hit 30 doors. If we get a team of 10, we can meet our goals.
To help out, give me a buzz at 202-256-0499, email me at talib...@gmail.com or just come through on either day this weekend.
