My interest in this is on two fronts:

1) I work for Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for Creative Media.
We make sure industry has input into training and education so the
people in the sector have the right skills for now and the future. I'm
interested to know what skills are needed to run a hyperlocal site,
what training or support is available (if any) and what are the
barriers or problems with access to this support. We can use this
information regionally or nationally to influence policy, funding and
training provision. Will this come out of each session or would anyone
be interested in a session to discuss this?

2) I live on a street in South East London. We have a recently formed
resident's association who have had success working with two councils,
the police and the local bus company to improve road safety and travel
- in less than 12 months. We're interested in setting up a hyperlocal
site to support and communicate. I've got a shopping list of ideas,
but really don't know where to start. Could we consider a surgery
session for newbies? A beginners guide to hyperlocal? I'd like to pick
your collective brains...

hi Suzanne,

both sound good and links with the idea of defining skills so that a
blogger, who might just have a small part of the skillset, can ask
other people to get involved in their site.

On your second question, shamelessly plugging our own talkaboutlocal
resources (others should feel welcome to do the same), but have you
seen our tips, guides and videos at http://talkaboutlocal.org.uk/? I
added some newish videos yesterday and would love to hear any feedback
about how they work in communities starting right from the beginning.

welcome suzanne - very pleased that skillset are coming - would be
good to get a priority list down of the skills one needs to publish
locally and then to add increasing layers of value. in general they
are very light, if you can use webmail you can get by with
wordpress.com

wouldn't want to over elaborate things though so that people feel you
have to be a rocket scientist to run a local website - its about a
progression. i am delighted that i still can't write nor understand
html but run a reasonable website.

we have recently completed merging the occupational standards
(shopping list of skills and knowledge needed to do a job) for
broadcast, print and online journalism. could be a useful tool to
inform discussion? I can bring the full set and a summary map/contents
list that can be used for reference in the discussion.

Clare - I'll try and look at the talkaboutlocal resources before the
meeting - had already made a note to look and maybe you can point out
the most suitable videos when we meet.
