Hi

I'm a total newbie blogger from Ireland. Am very excited (and a little
bit nervous) about coming over and meeting people I have been
following on twitter, as well as the people behind the various
hyperlocal blogs that I have been reading.

I've been a community activist for over 6 years in Drimnagh and have
always wanted a cheap and real time way of getting the relevant
Drimnagh information that, only a select few would know, out to the
wider Drimnagh audience. So have been researching hyperlocal sites
since just before christmas and love the work that is being done in
the UK to champion local areas and promote civic engagement and so
much more.

The outcome I would like to get from TAL10 is

1) Relationship tips: Hyperlocal blogger with local authorities and
officials who are unsure of value of using social media as a tool for
communicating new policies.
2) Find out more about how to run social media surgeries, with the
intention of running similar ones in Ireland.
3) Get do's and don'ts on local reporting and governance, as per Ray
Duff and Sasher.
4) Meet Openlylocal and discuss their hyperlocal directory and
councillor directory and lots more.
5) See how the unconference is run with the intention of running an
Irish unconference.
4) Looking to find out more about what research has been done like
this one by Forrester Is Hyperlocal Hype or Happening?
http://www.forrester.com/rb/Research/is_hyperlocal_hype_or_happening/q/id/47653/t/2
As aiming to do some market research on current hyperlocal sites in
the UK and Ireland to see what their needs are and what information
their communities are looking for and again lots, lots more.

Hope this makes sense. Looking forward to coming to Leeds for the
first time. See you all there.

Pauline, Can vouch for the friendly nature of TAL09. It was also one
of the most inspiring events I've been to. It has certainly influenced
me on a day-to-day basis and led to an enjoyable and steep learning
curve! I even understand some techie stuff now!

Excellent list! Whether in formal sessions or not I'm sure you'll make
contact with the people who can help and advise. And the
'unconference' approach is actually just so natural! It's harder to
explain it than do it!

That's good to hear - because I have very limited knowledge of the techie
stuff and it would be nice to understand it a bit!

Hi Pauline, even before you get here there's some things that could
help you with that list.

1) Take a look at this excellent post by local government press
officer Dan Slee: http://danslee.wordpress.com/2009/10/09/what-hyperlocal-blogs-mean-to-local-government/
2) Podnosh has a really good post on running Social Media Surgery and
it looks like there'll be a session on this at TAL10 too:
http://podnosh.com/blog/2009/08/12/recipe-how-to-make-a-social-media-surgery/
3) Journalist Adam Westbrook has written a great e-book for hyperlocal
site owners giving pointers about newsgathering (http://
adamwestbrook.wordpress.com/ebooks/), the next version of which I'm
collaborating with him on and it's looking good! (subscribe to
http://journallocal.co.uk for updates.) There's also my round-up of an
MA Online Journalism session on legal issues (http://philipjohn.co.uk/
ma-online-journalism-law-for-bloggers-and-journalists-with-paul-
bradshaw/) and another good'n from Dan Slee (http://
danslee.wordpress.com/2009/11/17/be-legal-what-hyperlocal-bloggers-
should-know-about-the-law/)

Hi Philip

Thanks for the list. Busy going through it now.  I ordered the Adam Westbrook book a few weeks ago and can't wait to get my hands on it. Was talking to Anthony from @mayo2day & we are both hugely impressed with the discussion & content on this google group.

It will be great to get similar discussion and networking going on here in Ireland as well.
