Hi,

Hope everyone had a good time at the unconference. Would have liked to
have come myself but unfortunately I have had other things on this
weekend. Must get to the next one!

Just wanted to flag up something I've been working on for New Start, a
trade mag about urban regeneration. You may or may not know that some
of the issues you blog about relate to regeneration, both urban and
rural.

Our new blog attempts to provide more exposure for these posts and
hopefully eventually spot trends at a local level and facilitate
collaboration between local bloggers. We'd eventually like to create a
community of local bloggers who cover regeneration issues regularly.

Just wondered what people thought of our efforts so far. I've tried to
update it every day but there was a bit of a gap when I went on
holiday. If any one has any suggestions of things we could do to build
links would local bloggers it would be really helpful.

hiya

we have a ton of regeneration material in kings cross

see today's for example - 'regeneration' not involving the community, mainly because we took the devleopers on last time around and caused them a significant headache (from their perspective)

Hi

Well done to Talk About Local team for the unconference, that I, unfortunately unattended cos of that volcano!!!! I got sooo much from the tweets, thank you everyone and now busy putting a plan of action together for promoting hyperlocal activity in Ireland.

And on the regeneration topic, check this webiste Fatima Mansions regeneration in Dublin for an Irish perspective on how one community dealt with the local authorities and developers for their area.

Their Dream, Dare, Do publication helped me get a handle on a better, less frustrating way to talk with local authorities, developers and community activists and the rest.

all the best

Thanks for the story Will. I'll definitely include a link to that when
I update the blog tomorrow.

Pauline, is there a blog feed for this site - would be interesting to
follow them.

For what it's worth, we also cover a lot of stuff that you'd probably
be interested in. We've got a planning and regeneration feed you can
subscribe to, so that you can just get updates that are relevant to
your topic. The hot topic in our patch at the moment are proposals
from Forth Energy to build a huge big muckle power plant on the docks,
so that latest entries are mainly to do with that issue. The feed is
at:

Hi Rosie

The Fatima Mansions group don't have RSS but I have asked if they could look at putting one up.

Hi,

Here possibly, is a different way of covering urban regeneration…

It’s early days for us here, but the six month old Knowle West (KW)
community website is covering the local area regeneration. The website
was designed to be a voice for the community and uses a hybrid website/
blogsite setup.

http://www.knowlewest.co.uk

The locally hot topic of regeneration was seen as a way to attract
local people into using a website and increase digital inclusion in an
area that struggles to raise itself up from a whole raft of
challenging problems. Previous attempts at Knowle West websites have
all failed and use and access to the internet here is worryingly low.

http://www.knowlewest.co.uk/regeneration

Currently the bulk of the info on regeneration has come from
'official' sources such as Bristol City Council (BCC) and Urban
Initiatives (UI). But things are changing slowly. The website now has
a 'pulse' thanks to the continual work and input of a growing number
of individuals. Although we are still some way from blogging/
commenting to take off, something special is now happening. The Knowle
West Residents Planning Group (KWRPG) have met behind closed doors,
debated and formulated their version of the local communities plan for
regeneration. They now wish to share and debate their work with the
rest of the community and have decided to become part of the Knowle
West website.

http://www.knowlewest.co.uk/regeneration/kwrpg

Although the KWRPG section is small (for now), the regeneration
section does contain this key document that they have sweated over for
months.

http://www.knowlewest.co.uk/2010/04/knowle-west-residents-area-plan-draft

This shows a growing confidence and belief in their work, to put it up
against the professional urban planners (UI) and local council (BCC).
It also shows KWRPG’s recognition of the potential communication power
of the Internet. The individuals from the group that I have been
training to manage their WordPress accounts have made is quite clear
that they wish to take ownership of the whole regeneration section and
that in future, BCC and UI will have to go through KWRPG if they wish
to publish on the KW website.

For me this is a fantastic shift in attitude and confidence for an
important group of local people. I hope that the regeneration section
on the KW website will become a platform for debate on the
regeneration here. I would like to see Knowle West finally get the
opportunity to directly effect how their area gets regenerated, and
just for once, not get shafted by powerful external bodies. The
opportunity for healthy, positive and sustainable change is now a real
possibility. I will do everything I possibly can to help this process,
but at the end of the day, it is in the hands of the Knowle West
people.

It should be interesting to see how regeneration works in Knowle West.
