Whereas, the cities of Jersey City, New Jersey, USA and Saint John’s,
Capital City of Antigua and Barbuda posses a shared history of struggle and
development which has produced a resilient and conscientious community in
both cities; and
Whereas, the governments and peoples of Saint John’s, Capital City of
Antigua and Barbuda and Jersey City, New Jersey, USA have entered into a
“Sister City Agreement” to bind the ties that unite them, to share and to
cooperate with each other, to have educational, cultural, economic,
athletic, technical and other exchanges for the betterment of both cities;
and
Whereas, The “Sister City Agreement” between the cities of Jersey City, New
Jersey, USA and Saint John’s, Capital City of Antigua and Barbuda emanates
from the desire of the people of both cities, who are concerned and
committed to addressing the shared experiences of existence of this planet
and making life better for the people of both cities; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper that at the beginning of the twenty first
Century of the common era, that the people of Saint John’s, Capital City of
Antigua and Barbuda and the people of Jersey City, New Jersey, USA reach out
to each other in a bonafide gesture of international sisterhood,
brotherhood, understanding and cooperation.
Now Therefore, We, the Honorable Lester B. Bird, Prime Minister of the
Nation of Antigua and Barbuda and the Honorable Glenn D. Cunningham, Mayor
of the City of Jersey City, New Jersey, USA, as representatives of our
respective cities and following the common desires of our peoples and
communities to unite into this relationship, do hereby Declare that the
cities of Saint John’s Capital City of Antigua and Barbuda and Jersey City,
New Jersey, USA, home of the Statue of Liberty, are hereafter recognized as
“Sister Cities” for the betterment and advancement of all of our citizens.
The above agreement was signed November 1, 2002, by the Honorable Lester B.
Bird, Prime Minister, Antigua and Barbuda; Honorable Sir James B. Carlisle,
Governor General; Honorable Glenn D. Cunningham, Mayor, Jersey City, New
Jersey, USA; Honorable Eugene Drayton, Deputy Mayor, Jersey City, New
Jersey, USA

Sidewalk University and the “Sister City Committee” wish all Antiguans and
Barbudans a memorable Twenty fifth Independence Celebration.
