THE PEACEMAKERS -- Matthew 5:9

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

A peacemaker has God's perspective of things.  He is at peace with himself, so he brings peace to those around him.  A peacemaker solves problems with both truth and love.  A peacemaker is the one to whom others come for encouragement or counsel.  A peacemaker doesn't backbite or gossip or denigrate or belittle or ridicule.  A peacemaker doesn't refuse to give in or compromise or reconcile or understand.  A peacemaker doesn't give in to his own temper, but rather calms himself and seeks a peaceful solution.

To some, what I just described might sound like a wimp.  But a peacemaker, by God’s definition, is far from being a wimp!  The world will tell us that you have to fight for your rights, to stand up for number one, because no one else will.  The world tells us that a person who doesn't stand up for himself has no backbone.   A person who won't fight is chicken.  A little boy's first black eye is something to be praised, to be photographed, and to save in the family album.  Retaliation and revenge are what the movie industry thrives on, and what fills the emergency rooms and morgues in hospitals all over the world.

But Jesus said to be peacemakers.  Jesus said the peacemakers would be called the sons of God.  Jesus said that the peacemakers are blessed.

When you run up against conflicts at home or at work or in your relationships, are you a peacemaker?  Do you seek to solve problems with both truth and love?  Do others come to you for encouragement or wise counsel?  Think about it.
