SATURDAY, 10/5 - 10am (hike starts at 1015am)
WHERE: PT. MUGU / LA JOLLA CANYON and RAY MILLER TRAIL (north of Malibu on the PCH)
LA JOLLA CANYON / RAY MILLER TRAIL (meet at “Ray Miller Trailhead”): Located across the street from “Thornhill Broome Beach” camping, this is a pretty cool hiking trail, with some unique vegetation and elevation gains.
Depending on the trail conditions we will do Ray Miller Trail or La Jolla Canyon Trail.
We will try to take the LA JOLLA CANYON TRAIL up through the canyon to meet the MUGU PEAK TRAIL, and then back down to where we started. It is partial loop which returns back to the PCH, (approx. 5-7 mile hike). The hike is really pretty and crosses a creek, with waterfall, and pretty cool vegetation.
Just inland from that similarly named point along the California coast, Mugu Peak towers over the Pacific Ocean from an elevation of 1,266 feet. The hike from the bottom of nearby La Jolla Canyon to the top of Mugu Peak is 6.5 miles round trip with 1,250 feet of elevation gain. The climb up to the peak is a bunch of switch-backs, but is rewarded by ridiculous scenery. Hike will be 2-2.5 hours.
DIRECTIONS: 10 FWY to PCH. North on PCH for about 33 Miles. You will pass the "GREAT SAND DUNE" and on your right you will see "La Jolla Canyon" (Ray Miller Trail Head). Park along PCH or at La Jolla Canyon parking lot. Meet near restrooms. Hike will most likely start at 1015am.
PARKING: Either pay lot near trailhead, or park out on PCH, just read signs.
LUNCH: Following the hike, we can go back to Neptune's Net for yummy seafood or burgers, and great views of surfers.
