So through this article series, I would want to share how we can maximise our learning and remove some fear of this portion, in unit-wise manner. My focus was never on books as I started for geography after prelims in 2017 and thought that I could cover coaching notes faster.
However this is only one part of the equation, all note making and content collection can go futile if we do not apply it. As discussed before, most of us are not natural with geography, it is not our graduation subject or used by us otherwise. Hence collect test papers/questions, close your notes and attempt these questions, either in full or make framework in 2-3 minutes or roam around with these sheets of papers and think what you would write.
This would force you to think, there is no better way than learning by doing. It would make you very uncomfortable because we are not accustomed to use our brain like this; reading is much more convenient, application? Not so much. But it is much better to be uncomfortable now than be so in the exam hall.
My aim after prelims was to write 5 questions of physical geography daily (however I could not stick to it) but aim was to ensure that I become a bit more natural with geography and many of these questions may or may not be repeated hence I will have good collection of introductions/headings in my mind.
I also arranged PYQs topic wise so as to know what all UPSC has asked previously and tried to framework answers around them all the time. By this, at least the basics were covered and I came to know which areas require more revision as I was short of knowledge in them. Similarly I also visited online websites with geography questions. You could use any source, but aim was to keep my mind working.
sir, I have seen that in your geography optional test copies, you have not written around 10 points for 10 marker,or 15 points per 15 marker. But still you are scoring one of best marks. So how do you decide number of points for any answer?
Abhishek in optional we are rarely awarded based on number of points tbh. For a 10 marker, 4-6 explained points are good. I scored 266 in Geography which as per this year is not very high but not very low either. I used geographical thought in a lot of places, similarly geographical thoughts too. Rest I used paper-1 knowledge in paper-2 and vice versa. Maps and diagrams help you. But back to initial discussion, optional requires a bit more explained answer writing.
