Dreadnoughtclass battle cruisers were large battleships produced by the Motherworld. They were a mile and a half long and housed 5000 troops, which were sent out across the Realm to expand and control the Motherworld's reach, setting up trade lines that pulled resources in toward the Motherworld from across the galaxy. Super-dreadnoughts are also covered on this page. Less is known about them, but they tended to stay closer to the Motherworld, patrolling the pacified systems while the standard dreadnoughts spread further out. Their shape is boxier than the standard dreadnoughts.
Motherworld dreadnoughts were capable of destroying entire planets single-handedly with their standard weaponry, including the Sword of the King, which fired slags so large that the resulting blast was equivalent to a low-yield nuclear bomb. Using the powers of the Kali, each dreadnought could generate portals through space to travel between star systems.
Dreadnoughts were large battleships designed by the Motherworld. When they figured out how to capture and harness the powers of the interdimensional beings, the Kali, the dreadnoughts were built around using this power to fuel the ships. As a result, in addition to standard space travel capabilities, dreadnoughts were capable of opening portals between systems to quickly traverse the broader galaxy. Dreadnoughts were constructed on an orbiting construction site circling Moa, then named by the king in an official ceremony. The last known dreadnought to be built was the Peacemaker, which was nearing completion when the royal family was assassinated. It was intended to be the last of its kind, meant to spread peace throughout the Realm instead of the war that was so commonly spread by the ships up to that point. It was given royal red accents to match the royal dropship, but these were later removed and the ship was instead named The King's Gaze in honor of the slain king, then used the same way as all those before it.[1]
Dreadnoughts and super-dreadnoughts were used before and after the formation of the Imperium, including the destruction of Kora's homeworld, the attack on Samandrai, the Battle of Sarawu, the invasion and battle of Veldt, and the destruction of Sharaan. Their attacks expanded the reach of the Motherworld, while also suppressing those who would rise up against the Motherworld.
Peacemaker/The King's Gaze: The dreadnought ruled by Admiral Atticus Noble, this ship was used in his mission to hunt down the Bloodaxe insurgents, who had been harrying the Motherworld's operations at the edges of the galaxy. The ship was used to lay waste to Toa and Sharaan before meeting its end at the battle of Veldt.
General Titus' dreadnought: General Titus led a dropship, which he was tasked with hovering over the parliament of Sarawu and attack them if they refused to pledge fielty to the Motherworld. When they refused, Titus turned his men on the Motherworld, who destroyed his ship and executed his men.
General Balisarius' dreadnought: The dreadnought at Balisarius' command was the one he used to attack Kora's homeworld when he was still a general of the Motherworld. When he took Kora, she spent five years on the ship being raised in the ways of the Motherworld. It traveled in a group of dreadnoughts.
In addition to The King's Gaze, which is a major element of A Child of Fire, several other dreadnoughts can also be seen in Kora's flashback scenes. She spent five years aboard Balisarius' dreadnought before graduating from the military academy[2], which could be seen traveling through space surrounded by other dreadnoughts. The King's Gaze returns in The Scargiver, where both its construction and destruction can be seen. General Titus' dreadnought is also seen during his flashback. Rebel Moon: Wolf: Ex Nihilo: Cosmology & Technology specifically covers dreadnoughts, focusing mostly on The King's Gaze, which is also the first place the super-dreadnoughts are mentioned. The Rebel Moon Experience also features a dreadnought appearing in the Daggus sky.
In addition to canonical appearances, dreadnoughts have commonly appeared in promotional media, such as commercials. The King's Gaze appears in The Rebel Harvest: Save Veldt, an alternate take on the events of the movies. At least two dreadnoughts can be seen in the sky during "Liquid Death x Rebel Moon: Mandatory Beverage of the Motherworld Commercial," three appear in the sky of "F FUEL is for Farmers," and one more appears in the sky of "Invasin." These three commercials depict events that are suggested not to be canonical to the main franchise, but make use of elements from the franchise.
(EnsignWildman is having a pre-natal check-up.)
WILDMAN: I've been considering naming him after my husband. It's been atradition in his family for over five generations.
KES: I'm sure he'd be very pleased.
WILDMAN: My husband's name is Greskrendtregk. He's Ktarian.
EMH: Choosing a name is no easy matter. I speak from experience.
WILDMAN: Have you had any progress, Doctor?
EMH: I've reviewed historical, literary and anthropological databasesfrom over five hundred worlds and have yet to find a suitable name. However, I may want to give some thought to Greskrendtregk.
WILDMAN: To be honest, I've been thinking of something simpler. What doyou think of Cameron?
KES: I like it.
EMH: Cameron, from the ancient Celtic term for one whose nose is bent.
WILDMAN: What about Frederick?
EMH: Frederick. Very distinguished. However, it bears a closeresemblance to a rather impolite term on the Bolian homeworld.
WILDMAN: It doesn't have to be a human name. I like Sural. It's Vulcan.
EMH: Yes, unfortunately it was also the name of a dictator on SakuraPrime, famed for beheading his rivals, and his parents.
KES: You won't have any objection to Benaren.
EMH: You're right. I've never heard that name before.
WILDMAN: I think it's lovely. Is it Ocampan?
KES: Benaren was my father's name. He was the greatest inspiration ofmy life.
JANEWAY [OC]: All science officers. Please report to your stations.
EMH: Your scans look fine, Ensign. We'll see you in a week.
WILDMAN: Thank you. Greskrendtregk would make a good middle name, don'tyou think?
(Wildman leaves.)
EMH: You never suggested your father's name to me.
KES: I thought you were only considering human names.
EMH: Ah. Well, you were mistaken.
KES: If you like Benaren there's no reason you can't use it too. I'msure she won't mind.
EMH: Won't mind that I just usurped her baby's name the moment I heardit? Thank you, but no thank you.
KES: My uncle's name was Elrem. I once knew a boy named Tarrik.
PARIS:There's not much left of whatever it was. From the amount of debris I'dguess it was a small ship, no bigger than a shuttlecraft.
KIM: I'm not reading any organic material in the debris field. It musthave been an unmanned vessel. Possibly a probe.
JANEWAY: Any idea what happened to it?
TUVOK: The high residual energy signature indicates repeated weaponsfire.
KIM: Captain, the wreckage is composed primarily of duritaniumpolyalloy.
JANEWAY: Duritanium?
CHAKOTAY: I haven't seen many weapons that could do that kind of damageto a duritanium hull.
JANEWAY: Transport some samples of the debris to Engineering foranalysis.
CHAKOTAY: Continuous scans, Lieutenant. We don't want whoever did thisto catch us by surprise.
JANEWAY: Any conclusions?
CHAKOTAY: Afraid so.
TORRES: We've identified the signature left by the weapons fire. There's no question. It was Cardassian.
JANEWAY: Cardassian! Could Seska be responsible?
TORRES: No, Captain. I am.
TORRES:The probe was destroyed by an experimental Cardassian weapon from theAlpha quadrant.
(Paris runs in, late.)
PARIS: Sorry.
TORRES: I recognise it's signature because, because I know this weaponvery well. Chakotay and I got our hands on it when we were fighting theCardassians.
KIM: How did it get here?
CHAKOTAY: Probably the same way we did.
TORRES: The last time we saw it, it was heading in the same directionin the Badlands where the Caretaker picked us up.
CHAKOTAY: Originally the Cardassians sent this thing to destroy aMaquis munitions base. We nicknamed it Dreadnought. It's a self-guidedtactical missile carrying a charge of a thousand kilos of matter andanother thousand of antimatter.
TUVOK: Enough to destroy a small moon.
TORRES: Now add to that one of the most sophisticated computer systemsI've ever seen. They made this missile adaptable, evasive, armed withit's own defensive weaponry. In other words, unstoppable.
NEELIX: So, how did you stop it?
CHAKOTAY: We didn't. It got through all our defences. Worked like itwas supposed to except for one minor detail. It didn't go off.
TORRES: Leave it to the Cardassians to build such an incrediblyadvanced tactical weapon and then arm the warhead with an old kineticdetonator.
CHAKOTAY: The missile skipped off into the atmosphere and quietly wentinto orbit.
TORRES: I got inside it and reprogrammed the computer. Hell, I didn'tjust reprogramme it, I changed it's identity. I made it forget aboutbeing Cardassian. Now it was working for the Maquis.
CHAKOTAY: And we gave it a new mission. To destroy the Cardassian fueldepot on Aschelan Five. But it never made it out of the Badlands. Wethought it had been destroyed in one of the plasma storms.
JANEWAY: So how do we stop this weapon before it causes any moredamage?
TORRES: Dreadnaught masks its warp trail with a randomised EM field, but I can modify our navigational sensors to cut through that.
PARIS: And what are we going to do with it once we find it?
TORRES: I get back inside it. I know all the security codes. Iinstalled them myself.
JANEWAY: Lieutenant Paris can assist you with the navigational sensors.Keep me informed. Dismissed.
CHAKOTAY: Lieutenant. I expect everyone to show up for meetings on timeand properly dressed.
(Paris nearly says something, then changes his mind.)
PARIS: Yes, sir.
