A primary activity at Physics Day is the Student Workbook, which is designed to encourage participation from all the students attending Physics Day. Each year physics faculty at Utah State University develop a new workbook with a mixture of very simple and more challenging questions on a number of the rides at Lagoon. Separate workbooks for high school and middle school student are available.


Each teacher is responsible for providing copies of the workbook for their students. Each teacher can select which portions of the activities are best suited for their students; USU will collect the workbooks and return them (with solutions) at the end of Physics Day. Thomas A. Moore is a professor in the physics department of Pomona College. He graduated from Carleton College in 1976, and earned an M. Phil. in 1978 and a Ph. D. in 1981 from Yale University. He then taught at Carleton College and Luther College before taking his current position at Pomona College in 1987, where he won a Wig Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1991. He served as an active member of the national Introductory University Physics Project (IUPP), and has published a number of articles about astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, detection of gravitational waves, and new approaches to teaching physics. His previous books include A Traveler's Guide to Spacetime (McGraw-Hill, 1995) on special relativity, and a six-volume introductory calculus-based physics text called Six Ideas That Shaped Physics (McGraw-Hill, 2003).


This workbook utilizes analogies and connections to gravitational fields to help students understand the content. For example, electric force is compared to gravitational force, electric field strength is compared gravitational field strength, equipotential lines are compared to contour lines, etc.

I still use my textbooks for practice problems sometimes. Though there are plenty of practice problems in here, you may want to cycle some textbook problems in too. I like to print off one page at the beginning of the unit that has all the homework problems listed by section. By front-loading all the printing and choosing of the homework problems I save a lot of time throughout the unit.


Absolutely, yes! I wish I had this when I started teaching Physics almost 15 years ago! This will save you a ton of time that you can use to grade tests, set-up labs and just keep your head above water.
