We did not suffer of an issue described above, but the question was raised in an IT security review and I guess this (or a similar) question must or should be topic in many organizations using Agol in their productive environment.

There is no backup built in. This has always been super weird to me as all other production data services have it. Plus it could be a nice money maker for them. This was brought up at UC a few times and they always said no there is no plans. They are implementing (or have already) a Recycle Bin type feature where you could restore if someone deleted an entire item. Anyone got a reference here?

The best we have now is a Python script that runs each night as a windows batch job. It basically simulates you going to the Item page and picking Export - To GeoDatabase. With our security getting logged in via script is rather hard. So this year I switched to a script that uses the credentials from Pro. You login via Pro then Python uses that for up to 2 weeks. I have a dedicated machine that just runs this script everyday. I have to go check on it regularly. Also strangely only the owner of the service can run the script so if I am out of town or anything we just have to hope. It works pretty well until the files get to around 10 GB then it starts to fail or never complete. Most of this size is due to photos. At that point in the season I have to modify the script so that it downloads all the layers except the photos. That means I could still lose the photos which is still a big loss for us.

As for restore I would love to hear any ideas as I do not know of any way. We would have to totally republish the service from the GDB backup and all of my 123 forms. This would change the Item id which would be the biggest pain I think. The rebuild all our maps, dashboards, ..ugg. I keep all my configs in notepad so I can copy paste in the rebuild. There is an idea to upvote here to retain item id -online-ideas/keep-webmap-service-item-id-static/idi-p/932310

As the admin this is one of those that keep me up at night. I have 10 million of data on the line and I am flying with no built in backup solution. Again I have just never seen a enterprise class system with no backup before. I have spoken with Esri staff, reps, and even the product managers (even Jack I think) themselves but I cannot get anywhere. AGOL is hitting 10 years old now and is a critical system for a lot of companies so I think it is time.

Hi, not the best answer, but they talked about this coming in the "The Road Ahead" session at Esri UC this year. Listed under "Near term" for the ability to restore items... I can't recall but I believe it applied to maps/apps.

Hi @DougBrowning , we posted replies at the same time, I apologize I did not see yours at first. I think what was described at the UC is similar to the "Recycle bin" feature you mentioned, so perhaps this is not a true failover type system. Appreciate all the details you offered up and am curious to see any further posts.

I have had multiple previous generations of ReadyNAS using OS4 and OS5, for full system backup i simply backed up "/c" to an external USB drive. This copied all shares and user home areas, restore was quite straightforward except user permissions had to be reset. Fine.

I now also have a RN214 running OS6 v6.10.3. I have a handful of users with home areas, and a bunch of shares. What I want to do is backup all data so that I can restore in the event of disaster or major upgrade/migration. Ideally to an external USB drive for safety reasons.

I read the backup FAQ, which well covers backups - but not restore (except one FAQ that copies from external USB back to the NAS, but that is for large data copy not full NAS restore). I searched the forums, and at page 15 I had got back to early 2019 and I gave up.. and used google to fine specific OS6 backup/restore.

Ok, I don't need to link every article, but after reading through quite a lot of information including a brief discussion in another thread a few months back, I am now quite concerned that deploying RN214 with OS6 is going to be difficult to backup/restore, or should I say seems to require multiple backup jobs (one per share and one per user home area), but please tell me if I've got this wrong - and I hope I have because this will be very inconvenient and clumsy.

Personally I've done share-by-share backup to other NAS myself (though restore is a bit simpler for me because I don't use home folders). But you can specify /data (or whatever your volume name is) as the local source or destination of a backup job. So you can restore everything after you re-create the shares and home folders.

The challenge with bare-metal restore is re-creating the NAS home folders before you restore. Accessing the NAS with each user's credentials is a pain (and of course you might not know their password). But you can log in with ssh, and then use rnutil mkhomedir_helper username to create it.

I will play with /data (or my volume name, which is different) as you suggest, that bit wasn't obvious to me, looks like we have a potential solution. Actually, I just SSH'd into the RN214, and looked at the structure under the volume and this is exactly what I need. However, from the backup webif, selecting the volume folder only shows shares below that, home folders are shown separately at the top level, so I wasn't sure they'd be included in the backup of the volume. I'll now try backup and see what I get. I also note your comment on the user home folder creation issue (which I can workaround). Thanks for the tips.

I do believe full backup/restore is important to some users, the FAQ should capture this (perhaps Netgear can update the FAQ). We also need a simpler full restore process, if this can be fed back to the product team.

I confirm a backup of volume includes home folders (although not shown as included in the webif), and that's what I needed. This should be much easier than I feared, other than the user home folders issue mentioned above.

I recently restored backup files onto my user's new desktop from her old desktop. After the restore, I noticed that some Turbo Tax files were not there. I had the My Documents selected so all documents should've been there. I ran the back up set recently before i bought the new machine and well after she had finished her 2022 taxes.

The .TAX files from 2019-2022 were not there, maybe 2018 was missing too. I also noticed that the backup sets do not recognize all as financial documents, only the older ones. When i filtered by $documents, not all tax files were there and some were were just there as regular documents, but there were none from 2018 forward. So something did not work. Who do i need to talk with there because this has caused me and my mom a lot of stress. It costs a lot of money to retrieve files from a pc. That pc only partially boots now so it costs more to get the data. That is why i got her a new machine. I ran the backup back when it was working. I think there is an issue with recent Turbo Tax files getting recognized. i pay for the backup and dont feel like paying someone else a lot of money to get these files. If i select My Documents, it should backup all documents and it didnt.

It is funny that you can't restore iCloud backup on iPad once the iPad is all setup. I am in a situation where students have started using Unsupervised iPads and now we need to make the iPads supervised because we want the teachers to use Casper Focus. If I take backup and restore then it cant be done on iCloud because if I restore from iCloud BEFORE supervising iPads then the Apple Configurator will wipe off everything while supervising/ preparing and if I restore them from iCloud AFTER the iPads are supervised then iCloud is wiping the supervised profiles, confirmed. Even iTunes option will not work we cant take backups of all the iPads on our server and restoring each backup to its particular iPad and the students' home computer iTunes wont accept the iPads once they are supervised. Any suggestions.

Once you finish restoring your iPad from the iCloud backup after having the device supervised, connect it back to Apple Configurator, under Supervise, choose the iPad and click refresh. Your supervision profile should reappear.

Case-I:
If your sequence is 1) Supervise Device -> 2) Restore backup from iCloud so that wouldn't work because the only time you can restore iCloud backup is when you are setting up an iPad from the scratch manually.
