Issue just started with 4.8.0 where on exit doesn't save * Units * Configuration of toolbar * Starts in night mode I searched the opencpn.ini for these settings but not sure what I am looking for TBH. I also backed up this file and exited the program forming a new ini file, same issue. Any ideas?
Most of the countries we visit have very strict drug laws. Most conduct random searches of boats as a security precaution. Do not even consider bringing any type of illegal contraband or drugs. Not only could you wind up in jail, we will likely as well. Worse, the authorities will confiscate SV Joana. Please make sure that everyone traveling with you is aware of the seriousness of this issue. If a teenager / young adult is traveling with you, please find an opportunity to search his / her luggage before you leave home. Explain the issue and blame it on us if you get caught in the act.
We just kind of drifted into Maxsea via a business relationship we have with CMAP who used to own Nobeltec, so I have never done an evaluation of Maxsea against other options and probably never will since TimeZero seems to work well for us and I would rather go cruising and write about seamanship issues like docking and anchoring than evaluate software.
I took a quick look at the newest Macbook, and based on that admittedly cursory comparison I would stick with the Air. As far as I can see the Air has a more powerful processor and costs less. Also the air has two USB 2 ports and a Thunderbolt that can be used for an external screen. The Macbook only has a single USB 3 port so you would be pioneering a bunch of connectivity issues.
I am planning to take your advice and lash out to buy Mac Air, Maxsea and C-Map. I currently use Iridium Extreme satphone for grib downloads (via UUPlus) which works well with an old Panasonic toughbook (XP, 2GB from 2010). Are you happy with Iridium connection to Mac Air/Boot Camp/Win 10 or are you using the Mac OS side for the grib downloads? If the latter, I presume that Maxsea then CANNOT access them, right? Are there any issues with the USB-C port on the Mac Air with respect to Iridium?

The alternative could be a laptop, connected to a large monitor. The laptop could live in a draw with its screen shut (safe, dry, etc), whilst the external monitor would provide lots real estate to view charts.
Does anyone see issues with the second option? Never actually used a laptop this way
You maybe right. On the other hand, one thing I have learned in over 30 years experience providing software and hardware support to businesses and end users professionally is that we geeks tend to grossly underestimate the difficulty and frustration that a non-geek will experience with a given piece of technology that we have suggested they might want to use.
The Australian military base that housed the refugees is slowly being taken apart. Huge diesel generators, water desalinators, modular housing units, and even industrial washers & dryers are all quietly rotting away. Apparently the US will be building a bigger base here Real Soon Now. There were 2 PNG patrol boats (gifts from Oz) at the dock when we arrived, both with engine issues. The Customs folks took us into Lorengau, which takes over 30 minutes, although the roads were in good shape. There's a big, reasonably supplied local market and a Papindo grocery store, but the supply boat only comes 1/month, and many shelves were bare. In theory they'll take credit cards, but they couldn't process ours. The BSP bank has 3 ATMs. TheLorengau Harbourside Hotel is right downtown and has nice hamburgers, fish & chips, or chicken meals for about US$11 (K35).
There are a couple of villages sprinkled around, and apparently there's a source of fresh water somewhere nearby. In the afternoons, the bay can be flooded with kids out to bring water back to their homes. They're understandably curious of these spaceships that have landed in their back yard, and they like to practice their English. Letting them know early that your boat is your home and please not to come on board unless invited will solve several issues.

This directory mainly contains the CELLS directory that gathers all ENC cells, in a proprietary format. To launch ENC charts Click Databases and then Charts. A warning message concerning the use of ENC charts is displayed. Click I Accept to accept the agreement conditions. The list of available chart providers is displayed. Click ENC Chart Database Managing the Chart Database To make its managing easy, ENC data is split into cells. Each ENC cell is contained in a separate file. The ENC producer must choose the data so that it does not exceed 5 Megabytes. Moreover the cell size should not be too small to avoid creating too many cells. The Database Content dialog box allows you to manage the cells. This means the GB5X01SW.000 file has been imported on the 14th.of December 2005 at 14 h 59 mn 43 s. This is a new edition (update = 0) which has been replaced by the former one. APPLIED GB5X01SW (Edition: 1, Update: 1) on 12/14/05 at 15:00:07. The GB5X01SW.001 file has been imported on the 14th of December at 15 h 00 mn 7 s. This is an update (update = 1) that changes the 1.0 cell that used to be in the chart database. When an update is applied, the line below is followed by the list of modified objects with the type of modification. There are several kinds of possible changes: Insertion (INSERT) Modification (MODIFY) : the modification can change either the geometry of the object or its attributes.
