Estoy encantada de presentarme como la nueva directora interina de la Escuela de Inmersión en Español César Chávez. El objetivo principal de mi trabajo, es trabajar en quipo para formar jóvenes que serán miembros productivos de nuestra sociedad. Dual-language immersion is a method of educating students in an instructional setting that allows them to acquire a second language through subject content instruction, educational discourse, and social interaction in the second language for at least 50% of the academic day.

Through our Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program students are taught using a 50/50 model, in which students spend half of their school day in an English only setting and the other half of the day in a Spanish only setting. This program delivers 50% of instruction in English and 50% of instruction in Spanish. Immersion students follow the same standard-based curriculum in all content areas that non-immersion students would follow in any other Dalton Public School elementary classroom.

Our pre-k program is a state funded program that follows a lottery system, therefore, a definite spot in our Spanish immersion pre-k program is not guaranteed. Students participating in the pre-k program will have one teacher and will remain in one classroom in which they will receive all content instruction in both English and Spanish with half of the day being taught in English and the other half of the day in Spanish.

Dual Immersion uses two languages for literacy and content instruction for all students. Two-way immersion programs give all students the opportunity to maintain and develop oral and written skills in their first language while they simultaneously acquire oral and written skills in a second language. Students maintain their first language while adding a second language, and they develop pride in their own language and culture while developing an understanding of the cultures and traditions of others. The program at Stetson Elementary will be a Spanish/English program that utilizes the 80:20 immersion model. However, continuous and excessive contact with water might also cause a disorder known as immersion foot or trench foot. The latter is a dermatosis that results from prolonged exposure to physical agents such as dampness and cold, and was first described among soldiers in World War I (1914-1918)4.

A similar condition was identified during the Vietnam War (1955-1975) which was named tropical immersion foot. Soldiers exhibited erythema, painful swelling and increased sensitivity of the foot skin. This disorder was associated with prolonged contact with water (>72 hours) at high temperature (22-32ºC). Anatomical-pathological examination evidenced maceration of the stratum corneum, chronic inflammation and vasculitis of the upper dermis5.

Water at room temperature accumulated inside the non-impermeable shoes worn by the participants all along the working hours, which characterizes strong, frequent and permanent exposure. In addition, microtrauma caused by friction upon walking increased the odds for lesions to become worse and favored the occurrence of secondary infection.
