Sometime late in 1868, New York farmer and carpenter James C. Holmes bought a new pocket diary for 1869. Now, over a hundred years later, this rare document of craft activity becomes the center for an intensive study of rural carpentry in Holmes' place and time that unlocks an entire realm of significances.

Holmes' day-by-day record places his actual craft, not just its visible artifacts, in the context of nineteenth-century culture, society, and economics. Wayne Franklin's impeccable, wide-ranging research reconstructs Holmes' networks at a time when the coming industrialization of the building trades had yet to have much effect outside American cities. His meticulous identification of more than one hundred individuals referred to in the diary and his group biography of over sixty carpenters who practiced in the area until 1900 create portraits of real lives, demonstrating the complexities of the social landscape after the Civil War.

A Rural Carpenter's World makes carpentry a prism through which James Holmes and his work and his world shine. This graceful, living record has immediate and lasting value for social historians, students of vernacular architecture and the built environment, and all those interested in westward migration and rural America.

I'm on the top of the world lookin'
Down on creation and the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world

"Top of the World" is a song written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. It was the first international country single released by The Carpenters and their second #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Originally recorded in 1972 for the album A Song for You, it was remixed in 1973 for the single release, as Karen Carpenter was not quite satisfied with her vocal track on the original. Lynn Anderson scored a #2 Billboard Country chart hit using the Carpenters' 1972 arrangement.

Upon completing the recording of "Top of the World" on A Song for You, Richard and Karen considered the song to be an album cut and didn't think much of its potential[1]. The response to "Top of the World" on both the airwaves and in concert, however, was overwhelming - pulling it as a single, they featured a new arrangement and lead vocal. The hit that almost got away, it was released in September of 1973 - a year after the album it debuted on. "Top of the World" quickly became the Carpenters' second #1 hit, where it stayed for two weeks.

New link building: This new building connects the 1980 complex to the 1932 complex. Carpenters worked on this from concrete to finish with both interior and exterior finishes. It has a bar and cafeteria along with seating area that overlooks the speed skating oval and the ski jumps. It also features a museum that pertains to the history of athletes and the games that have taken place over the years of different events held in Lake Placid.

Speed skating oval: The new observation booth, restroom, and maintenance garage for the speed skating oval, and also formed up for the new placement of concrete for the new speed skating oval outside.

The Carpenters are proud to be a part of renovating a venue with so much history and significance. Their work will provide the best college athletes in the world from 58 countries with state-of-the-art facilities over the next 11 days as they compete in multiple winter sports including skiing, curling, ice hockey, and figure skating.

Biel and seven other members of his team who had worked on a 62-turbine project off Massachusetts until late last year are now part of a new American workforce whose skills are in demand in the U.S. and abroad.
