looking for projects that we could help with

My sons (ages 13 and 10) have a week’s school vacation in the middle of February.  I am trying to find out whether there might be any projects at hackerspaces that could benefit from some volunteers for a few days.

We have fairly basic skills – some soldering (through hole and surface mount), fabrication, 3-d printing, laser cutting, basic programming…  Our most successful project to date was a simple brain-computer interface (see https://icibici.github.io/site/).  We are interested in getting started with software defined radio.

If you knew of anyone with interesting projects that we might be able to help with, I would be grateful to hear from you.

Thank you,

Hi Colin!
My 14 year old daughter will be visiting hackerspace for the first time at the open houses on Tuesday and Thursday next week.

Will you be there? It would be fun for her to meet other 'teens' who are interested in working on projects in the space.

Her background is more in robotics.

Hi Joyce,

Thanks for your e-mail!

We don’t live in Taiwan, so are looking for somewhere to visit during their February ½ term school break (18 – 22 Feb).

We’d started going to the London Hackspace years ago after my daughter and I visited one of their open nights – she had a fantastic time, and we were hooked.  I hope that your daughter has a similarly good time.

Best,

Colin

Hopefully, she'll have a similarly great experience Tuesday and Thursday this coming week.  She'll be visiting the Hackerspace with one of her 'local' friends.

We're in town Feb 18-22, but she's got class from 10-2. If you want to meet at the Hackerspace after 2 that week, it'd be fun to put a project together.

Let me know if you come to Taipei!

Thank you Patrick and Joyce.

Actually, here's another possibility: would anyone be interested in working with us on building an AI to play the board game Diplomacy that week (18 - 22 Feb)?

Initially, there are hard-coded bots in Java that we can start with (as part of an annual competition).  Eventually, we'd like to introduce proper reinforcement learning.

Here are some slides introducing the project: http://www.wrongdoing.org/181004_Diplomacy_AI.pdf.  We gave a 'lightning talk' over the summer on this: https://youtu.be/Ojpn3UXZuGM?t=1033 ?

Best,

Colin

My daughter, Julia and I, definitely would be interested in working on this with you.

Thanks Joyce.

We'd need someone with more software skills than I have.  Specifically, we'd need someone with some Java (Eclipse is the IDE used in the documentation for the current bot framework) and machine-learning (I don't know which of TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch... makes the most sense) experience.

If my sons were up for this (I'm predicting a split vote right now), I'd be happy to help pay for someone with these skills - but suspect that the key would be to find the right person: someone willing to work with children; someone willing to work for less than their market rate.

I don't know how to find someone in Taipei who could help us.  Would you have any suggestions?  I'm happy to write people and describe what we'd need.

Best,

Colin

Welcome.
ML for 13 and 10 could be tough, however, if they know basic stuffs, we can discuss these while your trip in Taipei.  There is a nice garden on top of Taipei hacker space.   Since you guys know SDR, one possible short project is to make a non-wifi (for very long distance) IOT monitoring station to transmit garden's info to web server.  Of cause, there are some toy cars over there waiting for converting into wireless controlled car.  3D printers waiting for adding camera monitoring capacity,... We can discuss further...

Welcome.
What I have told to Colins also applies to you.  Your daughter's backgroud and interest are different than theirs.  However, I believe we can work on something that everyone can participate and enjoy.  There is a sewing machine and a CNC.  For a girl interesting in robotics, I was wondering if she will like to work on enhance tools, for example, make the sewing machine computer controlled, or add something for 3D printer?  We can discuss fiurther

Taipei Hackerspace (HS),
不知道是否那樣。

因爲我們團體內目前英文話者不多,所以如果他們在那段時間真的會來到 HS,
還是我想請你幫忙迎接他們。

謝謝

 yusuke

The keyholder at day time will be there Feb 18~22, except for 20.
I certainly will be there 18th and 21st afternoon.  The rest of days depends on my available schedule.   If help are needed, I may come more often during those time.
Mr .Yusuke Kokubu has reminded that there are guarding rules for children.  I will translate it in to English and post in a separated post.

Regards
