With your stream box, the subtitles you see, can you confirm what you are watching with these subtitles and If it is consistently the same type across different apps?

H Joe ... The subtitles I have an issue with are those outwith the Apps (Disney+, Netflix, etc), where they all can be tweaked to suit my preferences (ie size, background, etc). All the Sky, national channels, etc, have no options within the Stream box to set how I want the subtitles to show on my tv?

But sometimes I find that subtitles are off by as many as several seconds when watching a film in Infuse. And even if I adjust the time offset so that they are back in sync, at some point I find that they get out of sync again.

One thing to keep in mind is that subtitles timings can vary based on the frames per second (FPS) of the video. For example, movies released in the US are encoded at 24 FPS while movies released in the UK (and some other parts of the world) are encoded at 25. Using a 25fps subtitle with a 24fps video (and vice versa) will cause the subtitles to become increasingly out of sync as the movie goes one.

So, for example, if you notice your subtitles are appearing 5 seconds late, you would want to set your offset to -5.00. The plus/minus buttons can be used to go up/down in 0.25s increments, or you can tap the number text to type in a specific value.

You can also just press H and G while the video is running to align the subtitles backward and forward in time; for the voice use J and K. The increments are in milliseconds, so it can be pretty easily fine tuned that way.

By command-line is possible to use the option --sub-delay followed by the number positive or negative of 1/10 of seconds of delay to add. So to shift the subtitle of 3 second you can run vlc with the following command line

However, if you want more functions and possibility to save synchronization permanently in your subtitle file, then you would need to use tools such as Subtitle Workshop (Windows only) or Jubler (Java cross-platform).

Because it runs in the browser, SubSync has no installation hassles, and doesn't care what browser or OS you're using. It only takes a couple of minutes to synchronise before settling down for a couple of hours to watch the movie, so I find it's worth doing as a matter of course.

I'm not sure about other OSes, but with Linux, if your subtitles are embedded within the video file (*.mkv or whatever), it's easy to extract them into a file for SubSync using ffmpeg. At the terminal...

My answer I just did this works great: start the movie and add the subtitle file as normal. Then, go "tools" select "Track Synchronization" then you have options to delay or advance(start earlier) the subtitle file by as many seconds as you want! Keep fiddling with it until the first statement and first subtitle aligln. Easy.

Regardless of which Apple TV show I am watching whether it be Tehran or Truth about 60 seconds after I press play the subtitles disappear. If I exit out of the shell or out of the Apple TV app and re-enter and press play again once again for about 60 seconds it will display the close captions. This does not necessarily matter in his show in which I understand the language, but it does matter when I watch Tehran. How do I fix this problem? It only happens in my Apple TV app.

Unfortunately, doesn't seem like this issue is getting any attention by Apple. I will add, the problem has most often occurred for me on my iPad Pro when I have tried to skip forward or back multiple times in the same episode. With Invasion, I paused multiple times to try and increase the screen brightness (a losing battle). After that start/stop/skip situation, the subtitles would completely crap out. Then I'd pause/rewind trying to get the subtitles back (selecting always on or recommended etc). Even force closing the app and restarting. The only solution was to give up and try another day. They *would be back on a follow up viewing.

The best advice is to disable and enable subtitles, which can partially work for up to a day. But still only partially, as you get subtitles sometimes and then they disappear. Switching between size and type of font sometimes works for a day, but still only partially. With a show like MacBeth, I need subtitles the whole show (because I was born in the 20th century). My biggest question is why? I thought streaming services had this figured out years ago. Maybe Apple needs to hire a tech company to explain to Apple how to fix this.

Same issue. Sony Bravia TV with Apple TV app. I enable regular English subtitles for all programs due to hearing issues. With the Invasion series, the English subtitles for English-speaking characters work consistently. But the Japanese to English translations for characters speaking Japanese disappear in the middle of dialogue. If I reset everything the Japanese translation subtitles come back, but only for a few moments. Very annoying.

I absolutely agree with EdDC! We are having the same issue and gave up watching Macbeth last night because of this issue. Previously, watching "For All Mankind" the subtitles/closed-captioning would disappear after about 30 seconds, but then if we paused the video and backed it up a bit (to catch that missed bit of dialog), the subtitles would come back and be fine for the rest of the episode. That's not the case with Macbeth; the subtitles go away and come back erratically. We're using an Amazon Fire Stick with the Apple TV app.

Same issue here. Subtiles drops after some minutes or so, and I have to change subtitles to other language and then back again. Very frustrating. My ATV+ app is installed on Nvdia Shield 2016 unit and updated to the newest version.

I've been having this issue for a while now on my TCL. Apple TV+ is too much of a resource hog for the built-in Roku, so I'm running it through my Fire Stick 4K. But same thing, works for a short while then nothing. Very frustrating for a show like Invasion, that seems to speaks every language there is. I've turned the captions from Off to Auto to English over and over, the result is always the same. I'm guessing, that those with Apple TV devices aren't having any issues.

I'm having the same issue. I've timed it multiple times, from the time I start video with subtitles until they disappear. It's about 50-60 seconds. If I exit the video (Foundation in this case) and go to Apple TV+ settings - Accessibility - Subtitles and captions, change the setting and go back to the video, they work and then disappear again after 50-60 seconds. I tried other shows, like Ted Lasso, and the same problem occurs. I'm using a Firestick with the Apple TV+ app in the 'man cave', both with the latest software updates. The Apple TV app on my Samsung TV doesn't have this problem, so thinking it might be the Firestick, I was going to purchase another Firestick, until I found this thread. Turned Firestick subtitles off and on, to no avail. Very frustrating.

It seems to me that the issue is more frequent when one pauses the video and turns it on again. But the frequency is hard to predict and thus recreate 1:1.. but happens multiple times while watching fx. Ted Lasso atm. Also DRM issues happens a couple of times. I have an ATV+ 3 month trial after buying new iphone. Sadly not going to prolong the trial if issue is not fixed by then. Otherwise nice service.

Dropped subtitles are especially irritating when watching Macbeth, where it helps to see the words visually. We go back and forth to settings and reset, trying different fonts and transparency level, but nothing works. We gave up on the show. I like subtitles for all shows, by the way, since I misunderstand words from time to time.

Ive got the same problem. After a few minutes the subtitles vanish, ive tried polish, english and hard of hearing subtitles - switching subtitles works only for a while and then the subs vanish again. (Suspicion and Afterparty)

First of all, I disagree with the assessment that most of the paid translators are not as good as volunteers. As with the volunteers, the skill levels of the paid translators vary but I would rate most of them from decent to great. While there are some outstanding volunteer translators, there are quite a few questionable ones, not to mention abusers.

The modern K-dramas are getting more and more difficult to translate, with all the wordplays, idioms, hidden humor and whatnot. For those tough-to-translate shows, I would actually welcome an early intervention by the paid translators if I were a part of the English team in order to minimize translation mistakes. In fact, if I see a stronger and faster subber start translating in the part I am working on, unless it was done with ill intention, I would gladly move out of the way. After all, are we not all working towards the same goal of speedy and quality translation? I would not expect Viki to slow down the release of the videos so that I can have an opportunity to translate a popular show.

Enough with doom and gloom, I was wondering if there were ever any efforts made to form a council made up of representatives from each volunteer community (i.e. segmenters, English subbers, English editors, large OLs, small OLs, etc.) to discuss matters of importance with the Viki staff. It may not be feasible but I think it is becoming evident that we have to find a way to communicate better with each other in order to restore the harmony within the volunteer community.
