When I have done this in the past I create a 4 layer sandwich of Cross hatch and radial with care to make the center spot not to have an edge of a cross hatch. The problem is that when you only use one or the other you end up with ether many minor dead spots or one huge one in the center.

We actually use both! radial–crosshatch–radial. Takes more tape, but the head last a lot longer!

Hello all, and again, a shout out to The Genki Spark: Taiko Projects with Attitude!

They really are quite easy to build. The drawback to the radial pattern I used for the head is that it creates a dead spot in the center. For the next okedo, I'm going to try a cross-hatch pattern with the strapping tape for a more consistent sound. Tip: Duck tape seems to stick better than Duct tape.
