FacebookHi Lee Sensei,

I hope you have gotten over the jetlag!

I’m glad to see that we play the same version of Yatai as the original.

As you know, I would love to come to Japan this year, but I’m not sure that I can make it financially!! A friend Shakuhachi-player asked me if I would consider going with her to Kyoto to perform at the World Shakuhachi-festival. (open podium day) This festival is held from May 31 to june 4. If I could pay for it; would you allow me to use some of your drums??
Would it also be possible to train with you after that from june 5 to eg.17; unfortunately, I can’t stay for the Inadani and the concert on the 24th, as I have an obligation with Wadokyo; we have a big concert in Kiel, Germany that same day, and after that I”ll be in Spain and Italy for most of July. As I have 2 big concerts on august 2nd and 17th; most of august is out of the question as well. But are there bootcamps end of august??
I want to set up a joint concert with You/Tokara and me/feniks Taiko when you are back in Europe. I can’t afford to bring you over, so it needs to be when you are already here. Of course, many people would like to take a workshop again then. I’ve lost the Chapel now as a practice Dojo, but occasionally, I might be able to use it again, or I can find another location.
Greetz to everyone!!

Oh my, sorry to everyone. I haven't checked this in a few years it seems.
On the topic of fue part, I made a lesson video for my students here quite a while ago, but deleted it afterwards. Instead of making a new one, I found a good video of someone stalking a fue player.
Just so you know though, there are different versions of the fue part, some more intricate than others. But this video shows a very good basic version.

James Tan, I’m okay with kuchoshoga now. But I still prefer the western notation if rhythms are very complicated. But when I teach kids taiko, I just use kuchoshoga. 🙂
Alex J Sinclair I think people like western notation and people like kuchoshoga it’s very very interesting. I think in my head, I want to know a precise rhythm. Is that it? So I could sound robotic maybe... but I studied western music for years so maybe that’s why it was hard for me to understand kuchoshoga... my brain used to transpose kuchoshoga to western music notations.

I was a violinist for 15 years so I understand how you feel. To me Japanese traditional music isn’t a standard time but a collaborative one. When it’s all Taiko (specifically modern) it’s easy to stick to a hard metronome. Though add a shishi, a minyo dancer, fue, shamisen etc etc and the more traditional music brakes under the pressure. The way the Ondekoza/Kodo version of yatai fixes this is by making the base beat a straight hit as opposed to the Chichibu hozonkai org. which has a lag on the 4th hit.

The problem I have in western notation is that there is no room (or insanely difficult to write out) the Ma of the song. Also for fue western notes is harder to remember than finger hole numbering

Alex J Sinclair yes. I totally get it! I realized I'm lucky because I was born and raised in Japan. So I have bit more science of "ma" than some of the members of my taiko group. It's very difficult to explain... and each of our science of ma is different, which makes everything very interesting!

Naoko - you'd make my students very happy! They all groan loudly whenever I start with kuchi shouga.

Also for fue western notes is harder to remember than finger hole numbering.
