Would like to be able to copy a user story (and all its subtasks and comments) in order to use it again. I have look for possible solutions and have yet to find one. Would appreciate any help with a solution.

Hi!

This or a very similar feature gets asked from time to time. It usually involves cloning or copying everything or part of a user story. So far the number 1 use case is to carry over an unfinished US to the next sprint. Is this your case? We sometimes tend to find convenient workarounds to more systemic problems (like not finishing a US in a sprint) instead of actually fixing the root of the problem (perhaps too much commitment from the team? US exploded? Epic US disguised as normal US? chaotic sprint where nothing remains predictable?).

At Taiga we try to find a good compromise between great usability and agile principles and it's quite a challenge, so I would like to know more about you use case scenario and see how Taiga can (or will be able to) help.

Thanks!

Thank you for your solution to the issue. I am an intern at a billing company and we regularly have to use the same user stories over again. My company would really like the functionality of a template like solution. It seems that you have had a call for this type of functionality from other users. From your suggestion involving promoting the issues to US,  we think that we can write a script that could accomplish this task. This is a good project for me to tackle. Is this something that you would be interested in?

Email reply from Pablo Ruiz Múzquiz:

Yes, that helped and that is very similar to "use case 2", which is US templating system. When people have this kind of need, they normally use the issue module and create a bunch of issues with the tag "template". You can filter by that tag and simply "promote to US" every time cycling over that filtered query. As simple as that. It does the trick but it doesn't carry the tasks, which is what you also want. For that, we don't have a solution right now other than suggesting that those template issues have a list of tasks titles as part of the issue description and you simply copy and paste them as new tasks as soon as it is a promoted US. You would only add the tasks you need each time simply by copying the right ones.

The concept of templates is something we will like to delve into sooner rather than later but so far the main use case for that is organizations and teams that tend to replicate similar work over and over and you don't see that very often but if we were able to create a template system which covered other use cases, it could be great addition to the Taiga feature-set, don't you think?

Email reply from Jared McReynolds:

The case is that we have a monthly checklist that involves the same US's every sprint. Copy may not be the right word. We might need something more along the lines of a template similar to a copy as new. We would still need the same subtasks that are attached to the US but reset every time. Since the US is the exact same every time we would like to attempt to streamline the process. Does that help?

Hi Jared

That sounds great! Right now the only thing I could say is "Go ahead!". Scripts and the Taiga API are sometimes a great way to achieve ad-hoc needs. We'd be glad to see how your script finally serves your purpose, it might be a useful neat workaround for other members of the Taiga community.

Thanks
Pablo
