Hi,

I would like to know: what is the status for Taiga 7?

There was a blog post with some announcements of big changes - but then nothing for several months - this makes me worry, if the project is still active?

Also, is the development happening in the open or do you just plan to release at some unknown point in the future when "ready"?

It would be very nice to know more about the future of Taiga or just be able to follow the development transparently in a repository - that would very much take away the blocking uncertainty from this project.

Thanks for your attention,
Private Alias

Hi Private Alias!

Sure! I think I can help you here. First, we had planned for a revamped Community Space by the end of 2021 so that we could communicate more efficiently all this as well as getting feedback and encouraging both agile-related and Taiga-related conversations.
Alas, that hasn't happened, too much on our plate Product and Company wise, so it's absolutely normal that you ask for a sort of catch-up on our announcement a few months ago.

- TaigaNext (that's what we call the next major release until we decide on Taiga7 or any other release name) it's well under way. It's a massive task because we want people that already know Taiga to feel overwhelmingly joyful but also make a strong argument for open source project management for people that haven't considered Taiga yet. We actually had one of our regular Sprint Demos today where we showed a very much improved Project Roles & Permission Settings section.
- It's a bit early to open up the repos because we need a bit of focus. Taiga is being used by millions worldwide and it would immediately trigger questions, feature requests, bugfixes, etc, that would distract the (supertalented but relatively small) team. We're not going to wait till the very last minute but I think it won't happen before May. There are some nice surprises around branding that we want to keep secret too :)
Here's a screenshot of the repo "pulse" and you can see there's plenty of activity
image.png

What I think we could do is host a regular (monthly?) stream to share the highlights and struggles of the Taiga team towards TaigaNext. Would you like that? A sort of a design+dev diary. Our other open source product, Penpot (see https://penpot.app/) is in a very different position, because they don't have Taiga6 and TaigaNext "behind the scenes", there's only one Penpot, period. So I have to admit we're leaning towards being extremely transparent with Penpot to "compensate" we want to keep TaigaNext without much distraction, but this is a decision you might not find suitable for your tastes :) For us, it's simply convenient at this time.

Thanks for your question! I hope this helped a bit.
Pablo

Hi all,

Sorry for the intromission.

So you have a plan for two different major releases - one is the TaigaNext (the middle step until the next major) and the other one is the Taiga 7?

You'll keep the project open source and available to run in on-prem servers?

We have been using taiga for some time now, but the truth is that we missed some features. However, we still believe in the project and although we use it installed on our servers, we have already converted several users to your cloud platform. We are looking forward to the next version to see if we will have any of the features that we miss now and if we can continue to use the product as we have been using it up to now.

Regards,

Hi João

Perhaps I wasn't clear, sorry about that. We are working on a major release that we codenamed TaigaNext. Perhaps, in due time, it will be called Taiga7 (after our latest Taiga6 release) but perhaps we want to name it differently, that's all.
Taiga6 continues to be the current stable and production ready option until we roll out TaigaNext, which will still be open source and available as on premise, yes.
In terms of features that you miss, make sure you have sent us feature requests through our contribution channels. TaigaNext will improve many things and add some new features but we can't promise it will make everyone happy. What we can sort of promise is that it won't make current Taiga users sad :)

Hi Pablo,

Nice, thanks for the clarifications.

Of course it's impossible to please everyone. Where I can put the feature requests?

One of that features is multiple buckets inside the backlog, for instance.

Dearest.

Are you moving to Clojure or you will keep Python?

Can you get inspiration from Asana?

We want to move from GitHub projects + Asana to Taiga.

I can help in the integration with Thunderbird with a MailExtension using the Photon Design System + Penpot.

Best regards.

Hi!

Well, easiest would be https://tree.taiga.io/project/taiga/issues for now.

Hi Alexander,

No, we like Python a lot :) It's true that Penpot (penpot.app) is built with Clojure and Clojurescript (see FAQ https://help.penpot.app/faqs/#why-clojure-and-clojurescript) but Taiga will remain a powerful Python/Django/Angular platform.
We get inspiration from many other tools, Asana is one of them but also Trello, SHortcut or even Jira. Sometimes to decide what NOT to do.

If your help is related to Penpot, please refer to Penpot's contrib guide. Is you meant something about Taiga, I think major contributions for Taiga6 could be potentially a waste of your time since we are focusing on TaigaNext. Better e-mail integration is in our plans so we can discuss that in Sprint this year.
All the best
Pablo

Thanks much Pablo for the updates. Back to your first offering, a podcast once in a while would be great, or a blog, or simply an update via this group. Whatever is easy for tyou or your team, but it would be very appreciated to at least briefly know that things are still moving strong with this fantastic tool that Taiga is!
Thanks a ton!

Sure Quique! We're giving much thought to this and will come up with something that's useful.
In the meantime, I guess you saw this? https://blog.taiga.io/update_taiganext.html
