Hi,

How do I add a Priority to a User Story? I can only seem to add a priority to an Issue!

How do I do the same for a User Story? Before our Scrum Team decides which items to pull from the Product Backlog into a Sprint they need to know the MOSCOW priority of the PBI.

Even when I promote an Issue to a User STory it seems to lose all it's priority ratings. As a result the Product Backlog is a dis-organised, unordered list!

The rules of Scrum state:

"Product Backlog: an ***ORDERED*** list of the work to be done in order to create, maintain and sustain a product. Managed by the Product Owner."

Any help gratefully received!

BR,

Kevin

Hello Kevin,

User stories by default doesn't have priority attribute but you could define a custom one for them on the admin area of the project.

Usually your backlog should be organized by priority (from the top to the bottom), that way when you create a new sprint you only have to pick the top stories.

Thanks Alejandro,

Listing in priority order doesn't quite work for us since we use the  MoSCoW recommendation of having a max of 60% 'Must Haves', 20% 'Should Haves' and 20% 'Could Haves' in each Sprint. We also can't see the Custom Field in the Product Backlog list view.

There is also inconsistency since the Issues do have a priority rating available, and of course they also are included in Sprints alongside User-Stories. Therefore I think there should be a consistent approach to all PBIs regardless whether they are User-Stories or Issues

However we can use a workaround for now of pre-fixing each User-Story Subject field with "Must-Have:..", "Should-Have:..."., etc.

Otherwise great product - thank you!

Hello Kevin,

You could also use tags, that way you can show them only when needed and filter easily.

Yes of course, then we can Filter!

Thanks again Alejandro ,

Hi there. I'll refloat this topic because I think it is important that Priority field is also available for user stories, other than Issues. There are many reasons for this, among them the one already listed in this thread saying that not always we can use the phisical order of the stories to determine priority. Also because by having the specific field added to the US it can then also be displayed in the Kanban board and quickly see the US with higher priorities from there. Last but not least, to not loose this property when an item that started as a high priority issue is promoted to become a User Story.
My two cents anyway.
