What is MyZone?
MyZone is a peer to peer social networking application and is part of a research project conducted under the supervision of Dr. Richard Han, Dr. Shivakant Mishra and Dr. Eric Keller at thecomputer science department of the University of Colorado at Boulder with the goal of achieving free and safe internet.
MyZone provides an online social network where users are hosting their own profiles on their own computers without the need of a publicly accessible server. This means unlike other social networking sites, the user privacy is always preserved as their profile information is only visible to and accessible by their friends on the social network. This approach is different from traditional social networking sites like Facebook, where user data is being hosted on centralized servers and can be used for targeted advertisement which may result in violation of user privacy.
MyZone in its complete form is also resilient to service blocking and censorship imposed by government entities. In other words, MyZone gurantees free speech for all of its users anywhere in the world.
There are other advantages of using MyZone which are summarized below. We hope that MyZone can be a pioneer in the next generation of online social networks where users are more in control.

Why Should I Use MyZone?
MyZone is a feature rich social network where:
- You can post links, status updates, video files (H.264 (.mp4, .mov, .f4v), FLV (.flv), 3GPP (.3gp, .3g2), YouTube, vimeo), audio files (AAC (.aac, .m4a), MP3 (.mp3)) and photos on your own profile or your friends'.
- You can comment on, like or dislike any post.
- You can create events and invite your friends.
- You can send private messages to your friends.
- You can assign your friends to customized Zones and share items with them exclusively.
- Your interactions are only reflected to your friends and you will not be bothered with annoying posts from friends of friends.
- You don't need to worry about any privacy policy as there isn't any and there can never be any.
- You are not forced to use new interfaces or features unless you want to.
In addition to all these features all your connections are encrypted which means no body with the exception of your friends knows what you are sharing on your profile. Encryption provides both privacy and freedom of speech to MyZone users as the information that users are posting can not be decrypted by any third party. This is specially useful in cases of government enforced censorship and tracking of opposition movements. For further privacy you can store your entire profile on a portable storage device and take it with you wherever you go.
Finally, MyZone is entirely written in Java and therefore it is a platform independent application and may be run on all operating systems as long as they support Java Runtime Environment. MyZone is very easy to install and unlike other peer to peer social networks like Diaspora and Friendica, it does not depend on any additional softwares or services nor does it require a publicly accessible server to host user profiles. Any user can host her profile from behind any type of firewall and NAT without any knowledge of server and network administration.
