Today's Mapping and more

Greetings!

Six of us went out today and worked on mapping the trails. We confirmed the location of some existing trails and we mapped out a new one. We used the Avenza mapping tool, and we also tied some pink ribbons around trees as we plotted, to help those that follow see what we worked on. It was a beautiful, mild day, and we had a really good time. Blooming witch hazel, bear tracks, golden stretches of blue stem, and lots of talk about what we need to plan for and work on.

Let’s continue to use this forum to discuss ideas about our next steps. We have tentatively scheduled another mapping day next Saturday, the 13th, on the earlier side. I’d also like to throw out Thursday the 11th as a possible date, because the weather is going to be much milder. If either or both of those dates work please let us know.

We also have penciled in Tuesday, January 13th for an in-person meeting at Taghkanic Town Hall, in the early evening, 5:30ish, depending on feedback from all of you. This would be for the committee to establish an outline of our plans and goals, and we welcome all committee members and stewards to come and contribute.

It was a great start in mapping the trails and a beautiful winter walk at the same time!  No sure about the two proposed dates but will try to make them, this Thurs might be better for me.  Can do Jan 13 for the committee meeting.  Excited to get this going!

It looks like some folks could go out tomorrow - Joshua, Eve and Linda (Linda until 3:30).

Tomorrow would be the better day for me, I might not be able to go on Saturday.

Others could possibly do Saturday - Gary, you mentioned starting earlier in the day on Saturday? Martin, what are your thoughts? David?

Anyone else interested in doing some mapping and starting to get a feel for what this property offers?

Please respond so we can get a feel for who will show up. It's always much more fun with a group.

I am happy to join the group tomorrow morning or afternoon. Just let me know a time and place.  If there is not too much snow it would be great if we could drive up to the Pond and start there.  Otherwise I would suggest the proposed parking area across from List Bypass.

Additionally, I could also make it Saturday late morning and maybe update those who weren’t at the previous walks, on what we have mapped so far and how to use Avenza.

Looking forward to another snowy walk!

Hi everyone,

I was planning on meeting the Lewis’s tomorrow morning at 10:30. We were planning on meeting at the Northern gate along Rt 11 where we met for the first day of mapping.  The plan would be to hike up Back Woods Road up to where we were yesterday and then see if we can make our way back to the cars along the proposed loop trail that is shown on the site plan and is the only one that we have not yet explored.

There are flags at the potential ends of this trail and we will see if there is a reasonable way to connect them through the forest without intruding  on the waterway buffer zone.

Let me know if you plan on joining us.  If you have some surveyor tape, please bring it.
