Dear everyone,
At yesterday's meeting I agreed to help with a bioblitz on the 6 June
opening day.
There are different ways to organize a bioblitz, but I think the kind
most appropriate for the TCF opening day would be mainly a learning
experience for the public. A few experts in different
specialties (birds, butterflies, amphibians, plants, fungi,...etc.)
would take small groups out to see what they can find, teaching as they
go and making lists. This can be a fun, interesting, and illuminating
time for participants, some of whom may be knowledgeable themselves and
can help with teaching. The species lists can contribute to everyone's
understanding of the site and its habitats, and can be the beginning of
larger lists to be expanded over the years.
I can help find some people to lead these walks, but let me know if you
have people to suggest. My own specialty is botany, and it would be nice
to have people who could lead walks for birds, mammals, insects (esp.
dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies), and amphibians & reptiles. Also
good to have one more additional botanists, because each of us could
cover different kinds of habitats (wetlands, forests, meadows) or
different groups of plants (wildflowers, grasses/sedges/rushes, shrubs,
trees). If the CLC has held bioblitzes at other sites, maybe you have a
stable of experts who would be willing to help with the event.
