I clean installed Minux LInt 18.2, after that, no matter what font I use, I have this rendering problem:

why those vertical dots?

I changed all type of japanese fonts, the problem is still there...

Never had this problem with older Linux Mint 17.3

Looks like a font issue. See in the preferences menu whether you can
list and select other Japanese fonts, and if they display better. If
you cannot find other fonts, this means you should install some more
on your system.

I tried program -> preferences -> change and tried meiryo, noto sans and a lot of other fonts. It seems font independent to me...

However thanks for the answer.

Do you see that in other Qt programs, especially those that can
display Japanese?

using xfce I don't use a lot of qt apps. I've just installed Goldendict, and all seems good:

Mmm, that's weird. Tagaini does not mess with font rendering at that
level. Guess we need to try a Qt5 version to see if things are
better...

With Mint 17.2 Xfce I had no problem, and TJ version is the same, so it is something(qt?) that got updated with Mint xfce 18.2.

Could you try a live cd/usb of my distro to see the problem for yourself? (https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_sonya_xfce.php)

I just remembered a thing that maybe could be useful for you.
When I installed TJ (using the debian package: https://github.com/Gnurou/tagainijisho/releases/download/1.0.3/tagainijisho-1.0.3.deb) I had thi error:

kanjidic2 plugin fatal error: cannot find main database file!

Unrecoverable error, the program will now exit.

To solve it I had to make a symbolic link from /usr/local/share/tagainijisho pointing to /usr/share/tagainijisho
