First off, let me say that Tag Folders is a fantastic idea, and I
really think that it's the best way to incorporate tagging into the
OS. I want to see it come loaded on 10.7, it's such a natural thing.
But I can't seem to get it to work right.

My main difficulty is working with Spotlight items. Events, contacts
and messages all have different problems.

Events and contacts won't drag from the Spotlight results window.

Messages will drag from the results window, but they won't add to the
folder. I get a growl that it has been tagged, but the item doesn't
show up, or it appears for a split second and vanishes. If I reveal a
contact in the finder and drag it to the tag folder, then it does the
same thing: it growls, but doesn't show up.

Events also can't be removed from the folder once they've been added.

Am I doing something wrong? I am using the latest version of Tag
Folders with 10.5.8, hope I can get this to work, because I really
believe it's a great idea.

Hi John,

I don't have a Leopard machine to test on anymore, but nothing in recent versions of the code has changed that would affect Spotlight Items, and the last time I ran it on Leopard it was still working just fine.

Just to clarify, you are dragging items onto the Tag Folder icon, not into the window that opens to show the results, correct? The window that opens is just a standard Smart Folder, and therefore cannot receive files.

Can you drag events, messages, and contacts from a Finder search window to the desktop?

Open one of the Tag Folders that you are having trouble with, and please make sure that its search criteria is set to include Spotlight Items. (If required, the Tag Folders user guide has instructions on how to do that.)

Finally, do you have write permissions on the files you are trying to tag? It is hard to imagine that you wouldn't, but your situation does seem very odd.

Jon
