What I'm trying to do is take the files off Dropbox and save them on a hard drive.

I don't want to lose the files but it seems very difficult to move files from Dropbox to laptop. I'm almost trapped into keeping them in Dropbox!!!

Hi Jane

Thanks for the reply.

Clearing the cache doesn't work, using Google Chome or MS Edge doesn't work.

Trying to download a different file doesn't work.

The error message says "There was an error downloading your file."

I've checked the browser permissions and other than blocking ads, midi player and pop ups and redirects (default chrome behaviour) everything else inclduing downloads is available.

You'd think that I ought to be able to download my own files, right?

When you download large files, folders, or collections of multiple items from your Dropbox account, you may receive a warning that the download will take a long time, based on your current internet speed.

All of the sudden, any shared links from OneDrive are not allowing people to download the files. It just gives them a .zip of "OneDrive-2024-02-15.zip" that contains 2 text files. The 2 files are "Download Errors.txt" & "OneDrive_1.txt" and just say there was a problem downloading the file.

I have moved files to different folders, renamed them. Nothing works. This is the first time in 5 years this has happened, I have always used the Share links with no issues. The only way it works is if I zip the files ahead of time and share the link to the zipped file.

@kevinrmoon Yes, this exact thing just started happening to me aswell (@ 17 Feb). I've been sending files to my clients this way for years without a hiccup, but now, they're getting that error that you described.

I have been going back and forth with support, they are less than helpful. I have sent videos, confirmed it's not my network, I'm not on a VPN. The support has been maddening, I can' get them to understand that this is happening to multiple people.

Good news is that I have found a 'work-around'... the download error only seems to be coming up when my clients try to download multiple files from the OneDrive folder (they can download individual files, but that takes a long time when there are over 20 files), so...when I zipped the files before uploading them to OneDrive, my client was able to download the zipped file to easily drag and drop them to their computer from the downloaded zipped file.

@Nickernoo The answer (the work around) on to how to deliver a set of files to a client is described by rhack30 above. On YOUR computer, select all the files you need to send, and Zip them into a single Zip file. Upload that one Zip file to OneDrive. Have your client download the Zip file and unzip the contents onto their computer.

I am also having this same problem. On my end everything seems to work fine but for the person I am sending a link to, they keep getting errors. The will even send me a link to the error and when I click on their link it just starts downloading the file I sent them. I even tried the zip file mentioned before and they told me they were still getting the error.

I found I can zip the files before loading to OneDrive and it works. The reason I use onedrive is I get 1TB of storage and with dropbox I only get 2GB free and then plans start at $10/mth and up from there. So I get 1TB with my Microsoft 365 subscription anyways.

@Matt_Clay My clients expect to be able to look at images first and maybe just download one or two as needed. Most download the whole thing, yes. But with a zip uploaded they can't preview. Dropbox is just part of the cost of doing business, I guess, since I can't rely on Microsoft's product working -- this has been going on for weeks and getting worse.

Hope this helps:

I have found that creating a test folder then copying the folder you are attempting to download into the new test folder and downloading the test folder allows all contents to download successfully.

To download a blob file stored on Drive, use the files.get method with the ID of the file to downloadand the alt=media URL parameter. The alt=media URL parameter tells theserver that a download of content is being requested as an alternative responseformat.

Files identified asabusive (such as harmful software) are only downloadable by the file owner.Additionally, the get query parameter acknowledgeAbuse=true must be includedto indicate that the user has acknowledged the risk of downloading potentiallyunwanted software or other abusive files. Your application should interactivelywarn the user before using this query parameter.

To download the content of blob files at an earlier version, use therevisions.get method with the ID ofthe file to download, the ID of the revision, and the alt=media URL parameter. The alt=media URL parameter tells the server that a download of content isbeing requested as an alternative response format. Similar to files.get, therevisions.get method also accepts the optional query parameteracknowledgeAbuse and the Range header. For more information on downloadingrevisions, see Download and publish filerevisions.

To download the content of blob files stored on Drive within abrowser, instead of through the API, use thewebContentLink field of thefiles resource. If the user has downloadaccess to the file, a link for downloading the file and its contents isreturned. You can either redirect a user to this URL, or offer it as a clickablelink.

The code sample also declares the export MIME type as application/pdf. For acomplete list of all export MIME types supported for each Google Workspacedocument, refer to Export MIME types for Google Workspacedocuments.

To export Google Workspace document content within a browser, use theexportLinks field of thefiles resource. Depending on the documenttype, a link to download the file and its contents is returned for every MIMEtype available. You can either redirect a user to a URL, or offer it as aclickable link.

To export Google Workspace document content at an earlier version within abrowser, use the revisions.get methodwith the ID of the file to download and the ID of the revision. If the user hasdownload access to the file, a link for downloading the file and its contents isreturned. You can either redirect a user to this URL, or offer it as a clickablelink.

You can download files and folders from Microsoft OneDrive, or from SharePoint in Microsoft 365, SharePoint Server Subscription Edition, or SharePoint Server 2019 to your computer with just a few clicks.

To download individual or multiple files, select each item by clicking the circle check box that appears. (The left image below shows items in List view, the right image shows items in Tiles or Photos view.) (You can also select several files at once by selecting one file, scrolling down the list, then hold down the Shift key while left-clicking the last item you want to select.)

The Download button may sometimes disappear if you refresh the web page while looking at a folder. To work around this, you can go up one level in the folder directory and come back, or close that tab in your browser and navigate to the folder again.

If your browser prompts you, choose Save or Save As and browse to the location where you want to save the download. (Some browsers just start saving right away to a Downloads folder on your computer.)

If you need to free up space on your OneDrive, download your file or folder to a location outside of your OneDrive folders (see below). You can then delete the OneDrive copy of the file or folder to reduce your storage amount.

If you select multiple files or folders and then select Download from Microsoft OneDrive, SharePoint in Microsoft 365, or from SharePoint Server Subscription Edition, your browser will start downloading a .zip file containing all the files and folders you selected. If you're in a folder and you select Download without selecting any files or folders, your browser will begin downloading all contents of the folder.
