Repair Corrupted Xlsx File

Im trying to restore some files for a friend who messed up a USB stick by pulling it out of the computer too soon. By searching invisible partitions I was able to restore the files. All files are intact, except 1 excel file that seems to be corrupted.

I've googled about ways to repair an Excel file, because the default repair options in Excel 2003-2010 do not work for this file. I've came across a numerous third-party apps, of which the one seemes to be able to do the job:Recovery Toolbox for Excel.

Of-course, this and all other apps I found require a purchase to actually repair the file. It seems a bit silly to pay 30 dollars for a one time thing, and something that is not for myself. So, I would like to keep that as a last-resort option.

Is there anything I can try to fix this? I've attached a screenshot of how the file looks when I open it on my OSX when converted to a HTML file (to view the code), for the option that it could be a character set problem.

My very important budget-file is corrupted! I use Excel for Mac 2008 on my Macbook (Mac OS X 10.6.8). This is an excellent tip, and saved me several hours of rework. I had a largish file with some tangly formulas with indirect, dcount/dstdev, averageif, and some array formulas and it stopped opening. Excel would crash with a EXCBADACCESS every time, on multiple machines and the most recent backup that would open meant losing several hours work. After opening it with auto-calculation turned off and saving it and turning auto-calc back on, it stopped crashing Excel on open.

Marifilps364, the instructions you provided are for the Windows version of Excel running on Microsoft Windows. The software you linked to is for Windows only. Useful information but not applicable to Macs.

I followed the suggestion to send the file to a Windows system. Then I changed the extension .xlsx to .xls on Explorer, and proceeded to open the file on Excel. I byassed any warnings to proceed as such, and Excel was able to open the file. I then saved the file as .xlsx, and sent it back to the Mac system.

i have download the compatibility pack for office 2007 and tried to repair and extract the data from the file using the excel programs but i get a message that says the file is corrupt and cannot extract or repair the file.
