Purpose: Reading is involved in various daily activities that operate under a wide range of luminance levels. Rod- and cone-mediated mesopic visual function is known to be impaired even in early/intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It remains unclear whether and to what extent mesopic reading is impaired in early/intermediate AMD. Here, we assessed differences in reading vision between photopic and mesopic conditions in early/intermediate AMD and compared their performance to those in older adults with normal macular health.

Results: Compared to photopic conditions, patients with AMD and healthy controls both exhibited noticeable decreases in reading vision under mesopic conditions (P < 0.001) despite normal photopic visual acuity. This decrease was more pronounced in AMD even after adjusting for age (P < 0.001): Under mesopic conditions, MRS and ACC decreased by 8 words per minute and 0.1, respectively; CPS and RA were enlarged by 0.27 and 0.24 logMAR, respectively.

Conclusions: Reading vision deteriorates under mesopic conditions compared to photopic conditions in early/intermediate AMD and is accentuated compared to this difference in healthy controls.

The ACTFL Latin Interpretive Reading Assessment (ALIRA) is a first-of-its-kind assessment that is based on both the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and the Standards for Classical Language Learning. It is a four-option, multiple-choice, computer-adaptive assessment that can be delivered in a single class period.

ALIRA assesses Interpretive Reading in Latin. ALIRA uses a wide variety of texts including shorter and longer texts from ancient Rome, authentic historical documents, and modern texts from today's classical studies classrooms. ALIRA provides a performance rating that aligns with benchmark points along the continuum towards proficiency. Within the Novice level there are four such scores (represented as N-1 through N-4), within the Intermediate ranges there are five scores (I-1 through I-5), and there is one score within the Advanced range (A-1). The score reports provide an explanation of each score.

ALIRA's design manifests the widely-used, highly-validated principles of proficiency and performance testing wherein test takers are given multiple opportunities to show sustained comprehension of texts whose demands and accompanying question align with author's purpose and the ACTFL proficiency scale. Because the ALIRA is computer-adaptive, the test modulates upwards or downwards based on performance. ALIRA's algorithms evaluate the performance at each level and assign a score.

The ALIRA is a valid and reliable assessment of Interpretive reading. The ALIRA was developed in alignment with a well-defined construct, following a rigorous development process. Items are revised, recalibrated, archived, or reviewed as necessary. Further, new items are added regularly, following the rigorous item development procedures.

The ACTFL scale provides a great deal of definition, especially at the lower levels of language proficiency usually achieved in world language learning. It is widely used in many areas, such as with commercial clients, and particularly in academia. Find more information about the ACTFL scale.

The ACTFL Proficiency Scale describes proficiency as a range and measures what a language user can do regardless of where, when, or how they learned the language, in real-world situations and in spontaneous and non-rehearsed contexts, according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. By providing objective criteria against which one can measure language proficiency levels, the scale gives language users insight into their skills and can help them identify strategies to increase their proficiency.
