is there a way to select multiple tabs simultaneously so a to be able to drag them all at the same time into a new group?  maybe i'm missing something, but if you had 100 tabs open, that would be a hundred mouse drags, which is inconvenient

Most of the time the tabs is already grouped because of the Tree Style Tabs feature. So to move all related tabs somewhere you rarely need to drag more than one.
Multiselect is planed, is missing meantime, you can donate by the way, to make it happen faster.
Yet as temporary solution for you desire to do tabs multiselect you can utilize original Chrome Tabs Bar - there you can multiselect tabs using Ctrl & Shift click and move them to other windows.
One othere options - try not to open to many unrelated tabs in one window - as there is better observability of all windows it is much more convenient to use on window per topic.
Multiselect is rarely need actually if everything is already logically grouped, and it is not a high priority task meantime.
