hi, basicly straight up, i purchased a volvo 660 with an isx engine, and it has a few inches crack on the block, i bought it from a dealer so they didnt know what caused the crack, it was a trade in, the crack is right behind the air compressor, and it leaks oil, so its not a freeze crack i think, any ideas what could of caused it, i was told the guy who owned it drove for almost 3yrs with it, in the picture u can see the location of the crack, the guy who had the truck just put some epoxy on to seal the crack, but it leaks a bit of old thru it somewhere, any advice on it, im looking to fix this thing before putting it on the road, not looking to weld thou.
I work for a Cummins Distributor, I have not seen a block crack there under normal usage, that does not mean that a crack could not occur there. I would contact your area Cummins distributor and give them the eng serial number and have them check the claims history on that eng. Claims history will show only repairs that happened under warranty, anything after warranty the dealer would have to get copies of any receipts from the previous owner. The crack looks like damage that could occur during a major bottom end failure, though that type of failure usually blows a hole in the block. I don't know how any reputable shop could miss a crack like that.
actually the engine runs flawless , and i was aware of it when i bought the truck, one thing i forgat to mention is it had inframe rebuild, and what i suspect is they tightned the not sure what is it called lol and it caused a crack,
Other than the main bearings, the only thing in the bottom is the block stiffner plate, but that wouldn't have the ablity to break the block, and if the mains were tightnened that hard your eng wouldn't be turning
I was with Cummins for 40 years. Like was said, the early engines had block and head issues. But that was well before 2001. That engine would have been built at Columbus before the assembly moved to Jamestown. That happened at the end of 2002.
The pan rail does not look like any damage so it is not likely that it cracked from an accident or outside impact of some sort. I have seen some of the very early engines that had a rod let go and they definitely do more damage than that. It could be from porosity that has not surfaced until now and the vibrations from the years of normal use finally cracked it. How many miles are actually on the engine? How many miles after rebuild? Was the rebuild done at a Cummins distributor or a local all brands repair shop?
Dave, the early blocks with a " C " casting on them sometimes failed. Most likely the casting process left a weak spot where the metal temperature was not sufficient for a complete bond. Have seen this on the older Chrysler gas 2.2`s but was very rare.

Cummins utilized an engine block mounted fuel supply pump in the earlier 12 Valve Cummins engine. When replacing or upgrading to an electric fuel pump you are able to remove the block mounted by using this billet aluminum block plate.
Starting in 2006 and when Cummins developed the 6.7 Liter engine, they used this same port as an oil drain for the CCV filter. When you replace the factory valve cover with a billet aluminum valve cover, this block place allows you to eliminate all of the factory plastic drain lines.
