Hello all,
It has come to my attention that some of you may be concerned about lack of contact with me. I'm reaching out to let you know that I am here and available, and that I have been actively supporting and advocating for Taarifa. If there is any situation that you feel that I need to turn my attention to, or if there is something that someone else at GWOB was supposed to do that has not been completed, please contact me directly.
- My email is lisha @ geeks wo bounds . org
- I am easiest to find instantly on Google Hangouts at that address.
- I am *rarely* on Skype, and normally only turn it on if I know I'm expecting a call, however my name there is "lishevita".
- You can also find me as lishevita on Twitter and other social media outlets where I have accounts.
- You can call me at 425-610-8636.
- If you use the outbound calling function in Google Hangouts, calls the US are free from most locations.
Things that are coming up on the horizon regarding Taarifa and GWOB:
1) The HDIF grant. During the "conditional acceptance" re-write of the grant materials, I was involved in fixing the budget for the GWOB/Taarifa portion of the budget. This was a good, if somewhat bracing, way to find out more about what our involvement is planned to be in the next phase of work. We definitely need to have a call soon to coordinate next steps.
2) Hack In The Box RHoKSec. GWOB and ScotlandHacks are doing another Random Hacks of Kindness Security event 28-29 May. This one will be at the Hack In The Box conference in Amsterdam. We'd love to have Taarifa involved with that. As I understand it, Paul Mason has already reached out to Mark Iliffe, but I'm not sure what conversations have been had. Beyond that, it would be great to have anyone from the Taarifa team who can come to the event. There is the opportunity to build new tools on top of Taarifa as well as to look at the security of the API and underlying system itself, through lab-based pentest and/or code review.
3) A new project in Ecuador. There is a project that is still in the information-gathering phase with regards to tracking encroachment on tribal lands by ranchers and oil companies. I'm imagining that an application built on top of the Taarifa API could do what this group needs. I'd love to have an opportunity to talk to any one of you about what that might look like, even if you are not able to devote more than an hour of online chatting to the cause. (ie, I'm not asking you to take on a new project, just to help shape some ideas, in much the same way that an outside mentor might do in the Accelerator program.)
Are there any other outstanding issues that we need to address? Please let me know.
Finally, I'd like to ask you not to go to Willow to ask for help if you feel that you are not getting through to someone (including me) at Geeks Without Bounds. She is no longer with the organization, and should not be treated as a go between. In the event that you are unable to get a response from me on some issue, please email coreteam @geeks wo
bounds.org which goes not only to me and Lindsay, but also to the president of our board of directors, Mark Smythe. You can also reach Mark directly at markcs @geeks wo
bounds.org Trust me, if I'm not doing my job, the board of directors would like to know about it. (But I hope that I'm able to do my job sufficiently that you don't feel the need to go there.)
Regards,
Lisha Sterling
