Just some thoughts from today while it's still fresh in my mind, mostly in the form of suggestions for next year.
1) We should be advertising this more widely and earlier. I mostly hang out on reddit's /NYCbike; all summer it was a frequent question, "What's up with the TdeBx? Is it being held this year? When is it?", and I see this most years. It would be good if as soon as the date is nailed down, we start socializing (i.e. social media) at least a "Hold the Date". I appreciate the work the BP's office puts into this, but let's face it, they get a C-minus for marketing.
2) I know politicians can't resist giving speeches anytime there's an assembled crowd, but perhaps we could compress that a bit and move the start up?
3) In past years, I think we've had DSNY run over the course the day before with their power brooms sweeping up debris. I don't know if that happened this year, but I did see quite a bit of broken glass on some areas.
4) Let's include a few copies of the cue sheets for all the courses in the marshal packets. I ran into one guy doing the 25 mile who didn't know where he was going. If I had a cue sheet for his route, I could have at least given him that.
5) The same guy as above, didn't know anything about the "Bx -->" spray paint markings. I found one and showed him what to look for. Could we include in the instructions given to riders a photo of what these look like? The experienced folks know about them. The newbies, not so much.
6) I really enjoy doing these events. Despite the connotations of the name "marshal", I view it as 5% cop, and 95% tour guide / ambassador. The 40 mile route may have had all the lycra, but the 10 mile route is where all the love was. I hope others feel the same way.
7) The only time the entire day I thought I was in any danger was when we were crossing Pelham Parkway (with the light) and some dufus on one of those "not quite a motorcycle" things did a slow-roll through his red light with his head buried in his phone.
8) I know this may not be a popular thing to say, but as I've ridden around the Bx, I'm constantly amazed at how many cars stop and wave me past, even if they might technically have the right of way. I saw plenty of that today. I make sure I give them a wave and a smile to acknowledge their kindness.
9) Finally, a big thanks to Shawn, Jada, Daniel, Kevin, and all the others whose names I'm skipping who put so much effort into making today happen.
