Kathy,  I will have Lee double check your insurance—since it has been a while since we checked, and have him get you those figures.  My sales person, Adam, wears the pump and CGM.  You could reach him at 630-518-7628.  Also, there is a Type 1 support group that meets in Wilmette every month.  They do have a website and “talk” online.  It is t1dl...@googlegroups.com.  Most of the people in this group are on pumps (and are female, if that helps).  As far as sleeping with the pump, I think I had mentioned the Velcro leg belt that is available, but some people put the pump in a toddler size sock and pin it to their night clothes.  Keeps it close and securely on you.  As far as the new pump is concerned—it has been in front of the FDA for some time.  We just don’t know when it will be approved.  However, Medtronic is offering a new product guarantee.  Anyone who gets a new pump AND the continuous glucose monitor are automatically eligible for a free upgrade whenever the new technology is approved.  I don’t think we spoke about the continuous glucose monitor, but we certainly can have a conversation about it.

Please remember to take the battery out of the pump when you send it back.  Glad the experience was helpful.

Hi Linda.  Just wanted to touch base with you - I am returning the pump today via the Fedex envelope you provided.  Thank you so much for letting me do a trial run.

I have to say, other than adjusting to having something attached to me, it was very usable, very easy.  I really like the fact that IT figures out how much insulin I need.  Since I had to manually inject my real insulin I used the dosages the meter provided and in most cases it was right on - better than I was doing.  There were a couple of times that it was a little low (not enough insulin) but that was my fault for not properly counting up the carb grams.

While it didn't bother me at all while sleeping, I forgot about it every morning and it went flying when I'd get out of bed.  The first time I was worried I'd pulled out the cannula (right word?) but I don't think that happened.  When I removed the adhesive and set, there was no bleeding, no itching. Also can't figure out what to do with it on my pj's - flimsy, no pockets.

And one more thing - I kept looking at the reservoir to see if the level was decreasing as I used up  the 'insulin' but I couldn't really tell.  Perhaps you can tell when you get it back.

All that said, I am still waffling on whether to move forward or not.  I still want to get in contact with pump users.  I have one personal contact that I can make.  I started to look for web-based support groups but didn't get too far.  I want to pursue that as well.

In the meantime, Dr. Rabinowe told me that the 'new & improved' version has still not gotten final approval from the FDA.  I don't remember what you (or perhaps it was Lee) told me about costs to update to it if I go ahead and purchase this version now.

Next steps?  Let me do my research.  Now that I've had this opportunity to try one, I am definitely more open to it and want to talk to other users.  And I also want to review my costs - both for the initial purchase and ongoing costs for the supplies.  If you could, please provide the cost involved if I want to upgrade to the new version once it comes out.

Again, thank you so much, for your time and the opportunity to test out a pump.  Talk to you soon.

Kathy Grenning

Linda - thank you for sending Kathryn my way.

Kathryn - the email won't work as it's a google group for people who already attend meetings so you need to be manually added.  But we welcome you to attend a meeting where you can chat with others on pumps.  I've used the Medtronic pumps about 16 years and enjoy the convenience as well as having it handle the personalized calculations.  When I sleep I wear pj's and clip the pump to the bottoms right in front so when I sleep on my side I don't feel anything.  I'm  happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the pump.

Please check out the website and let me know if you would like to attend our next meeting on June 12 where we have a guest speaker.  We had a fantastic EXPO Saturday and are a fun and lively group.

Best,
