Hello, I work for a satellite receiver company. I am the only linux
user in the entire company and I am going mad trying to explain what
linux is to chinese people. I dont want to turn the board into a job
center, so im sorry if this post upsets anyone. But I really need help
finding someone more experienced with openwrt then me. There is a
program for linux that is closed source called RQ-SSSP. It is a client
for satellite receivers to connect them to the internet for card
sharing by the rs232 port. The developer had released a Mips big edian
and little edian of the software. the requirements are just it needs
to be running on openwrt or dd-wrt under kernel 2.6. the developer of
that software has done very little testing on the wrt platform but has
done extensive on regular linux. Also it would be great if the person
can write an interface on openwrt for configuration of the program. I
will compensate you if you are the right person for this job.

sounds like a part time job, I think Yang Cheng and Andrew in this
Group can help you.
We have also have a group at Linkedin, but I'm not sure the members in
that group can be in Shenzhen.
If you have Linkedin, maybe you could post this job there:

Thank you for your suggestion I am already a member there and I will
post the same thing like you suggested. It is time urgent project that
we need done fast. But I figured most people here already have a job
so they wouldnt be interested in a full time job. if any body would
like a full time job in the baoan area. I will see what we can work
out for you. Also if anybody is interested to learn about satellite tv
or digital tv, I can teach you what i know.

I'm sorry for a mistake, Not Andrew, It's Anders Ma.

And Yang Cheng is his nickname's pinyin. His nickname in this group
displays "杨城".

build firmware (environment) from kernel by openwrt

I know a little about openwrt. One of our products is built on
it. Unfortunately, I am not immediately available.

However, according to your mail, what you'd like to do should not be a
problem for linux hackers. If you have mips cross-toolchain from your
vendor
in hand, why not have a try to build openwrt by yourself? A simple
script
for building openwrt is included in the src. You may need some tweaks
to
integrate it to your makesystem.

I suppose you could get other 3rd-party source code from the official
site
of openwrt to build your GUI. Common Web-base GUIs are available. I
can't remember the details. Take a look at the HP of openwrt.

I dont know were you live but this is china. The vendor doesnt know
the first thing about linux for the routers. I had to supply my own
redboot to them so they can upgrade the ram and rom chips in them. It
boggles my mind why any company would pay licensing fees for
proprietary software when linux is almost free for business. I blame
the chinese schools. Also if you have the tool chains for the ar2317
available to cross compile for it. That would save me alot of effort
for rq-sssp.

Take a look at this:

I also got quite some information about ar2317 + openwrt by simply
googling. Please just have a try.

All right. I think there may be misunderstanding on the build
procedure of openwrt. Check out
http://downloads.openwrt.org/docs/buildroot-documentation.html

for details. There is a buildroot which is based on uClibc. It could
help
you to easily generated both a cross-complication *toolchain* and a
root
filesystem for your device. See, NO MORE EXTRA toolchain is even
needed in
this case. But, as you mentioned you have already getten a big/little
endian
device, I guess there may be some per-built cross-toolchian from your
device
vendor as a component of your hardware solution. That's the same
situation
when we refer to your own device.

The education problem you complained goes out of scope of this
question. But, as your know, nobody could get it changed at this
moment
though few of us get satisfy with it. The radical change may go in a
quiet
way. It just takes time, may be much.

License is not concerned. Let's forcus on the tech itself.

Its not about building openwrt. its about building a binary file that
has nothing to do with openwrt to run on openwrt.

I get your point finally.

Two tasks are there.
1. port RQ-SSSP from a MIPS source to openwrt;
2. write an inferface for the application(will be a plus).

If the requirement is specified and no more IP problem, could it be
done offshore. :-) Just a joke. However, I think you can find someone
local to help you. Shenzhen is a heaven for small business.

BTW, I have great interesting on satellite broadcasting related
business in China. As you may know, such devices got boosted in recent
2 years. However, SARFT accepted the encrypt receiver as the *final*
policy this Oct. This may cause the marketing share varies in 2010- a
good chance for your company. But, all about this get off the
topic.:-)

Anyway, good luck for you.

The developer has released a closed source linux mips version that was
built for the dreambox 800, but it gets a syntax error when it is ran
on the atheros chipset. So the atheros mips is too different from the
regular mips to work. so his source code needs to be cross compiled or
compiled inside the router to work for atheros. If your ever in
shenzhen I can show you the satellite receiver factory and you can
explain to the windows chinese that work their why linux is so
important.

OK. So you have gotten the source code, haven't you? No matter that is
open or close, if you get the source, then everything will be fine. I
am not an experienced engineer on porting tasks, however, I do really
have some ideas on this kind of development. May you have a try?
0. try to compile the source code and try hard to fix compilation
errors. Most of those will happened to
0.1 glibc -> uclibc compatibility problems;
0.2 header file missing;
0.2 linked in libraries missing;
1. analyze the working version of binaries, if you can get them, by
'readelf', 'ldd' or such binary tools. Please focus on shared objects
and libraries which you need to import into you projects;
2. adjust your makesystem to ensure recomplilation goes smoothly;
3. repeat 0-2 until everything done well.

Actually, I'd like to do that. :-) I'll be back to Shenzhen for my
wedding 2 weeks later. It will be my pleasure if you could guide me to
your factory.

I don't have the source code as it is closed source. I most likely
never will have it either. The only thing i can do is supply the
proper toolchains to the owner of the code and hope he compiles it for

En~, for the toolchain, you may use what you get from the buildroot of
openwrt. Copy the whole suite on which your built your openwrt to your
close software vendor, including the header files and libraries.

If your have NOT source code in your hand, to hire a people for these
tasks is not a good idea. Praying and complainant would be the best
choice to push them. Of course, the actual effect on these all depend
on how much money you paid.

Hi,

I'm afraid I may not join the party on Sunday, however you can contact
Robert Zhang, as well as those ones that would help you on your case,
to meet at your company. Tell them what they need to prepare in

Yes, I went to Book City last night.
I think the place is good.
There are usually many events, like English corner.
Just hope when we get there, there is still room available, hehe.
If there is no room, we can find a cafe nearby.

The only thing missing is a projector.
But since it seems that we don't have many people this time, we could
just gather around our speaker.
We should act early in order to find a more decent place next time.

We can meet at Shaoniangong Station of Shenzhen Metro Line 4.
Then we head to Book City.
