Van Andel Institute, a private research institute, located in Grand Rapids, MI USA, is home to groundbreaking research fueled by collaboration, innovation and hope — all with the goal of improving the health and enhancing the lives of current and future generations. Our scientists delve deep into the underpinnings of health and diseases like cancer, Parkinson’s and metabolic disorders to drive new breakthroughs that change lives.

We currently have several postdoctoral fellow openings available.

Dr. Hong-yuan Chu is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join his team to work on projects which combine electrophysiology with optogenetic, chemogenetic, and machine learning approaches to advance our understanding of PD pathophysiology at the cellular, circuitry and behavior levels and provide insight to the development of novel treatments for PD. The Laboratory of Hong-yuan Chu integrates molecular, cellular and systems neuroscience to identify mechanisms that contribute to progressive degeneration of midbrain dopaminergic neurons, and abnormal circuit activity that underlies the devastating motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The long-term goal of the Chu Lab is to develop precision strategies to target specific types of neurons or neural circuits for disease prevention and treatment.

Drs. Juan Du and Wei Lu have multiple Postdoctoral Fellow positions available. The Du Lab and the Lü Lab are dedicated to unraveling the intricate molecular mechanisms underlying the body’s perception of sensory information, such as taste, smell, vision, and temperature. Our mission is to investigate how signals are transmitted to the brain and ultimately generate responses. We specifically focus on studying the fundamental ion channels/receptors associated with these senses. To achieve our research goals, we employ a diverse range of cutting-edge structural and biophysical techniques, including single-particle cryo-EM, patch-clamp electrophysiology, and various biophysical methods.
