IW13 Workshop on Discovering a Unifying Ontology for Systemists
Let’s radically reduce the failures and overruns on larger system projects by reducing the gaps, conflicts, and inadvertent error among project members. This is not about process it is about mutual understandings and explicit confirmations.
Workshop participants will explore ways to enhance the adequacy, accuracy and timeliness of knowledge exchange and choice making among peers on projects. We will focus on the words and symbols used on system projects and the interpretations and misinterpretations surrounding them.
The workshop will begin on Sunday at 5 PM with a 60 minute webinar session featuring Dr. John Sowa, VivoMind Research LLC, presenting "Designing and Using Ontologies".
On Monday we will provide two lists of 8 terms each in the systems engineering vocabulary. Three to four person workgroups will select one list and formulate a web of meaningful relationships among the terms in the form of a concept map(s) (90 minutes AM). Ideally workgroups will reflect the system engineering interests of various user domains, DOD, Transportation, Healthcare, Space Exploration, IT, Crisis Management, Governance, etc.
Workgroups will cross brief their work, noting similarities and differences, and each refining their web of terms and relationships as they wish. This portion of the workshop will be split into two 90 minute sessions to provide ample opportunity for discussion (90 minutes AM and 90 minutes PM). No right or wrong, here, just dialogue on why participants see things differently and why they need to see things differently. This will give us a much better understanding of the problematic situation with which the ontology project must cope.
At session end each participant will prepare an ordered list of the five most important triples (object-relation-object) throughout all the maps and give their anonymous ballots to Richard Martin. Post session we can process the ballots for a Spreadthink index and pick the top 15 to 20 triples to process via subsequent webinars.
