A colleague and I plan on pursuing the OCSMP Model User
Certification. Looking for some community feedback on test scope,
kinds of questions, general level of difficulty etc. Looking to put
together a study plan.

I have visited OCSMP site and reviewed the Model User Coverage Map.

Thanks for any additional help.

Thanks,

MattS

Hi MattS
I have done the exam around a year ago. If you need specific information, I
can try to recall. But, I have done the beta exam (~250 questions), while
the current is ~90 questions.
Any specific help?

Thanks
Eran

The model user exam is generally easy, but the biggest problem is the shock to people not used to taking timed multiple choice exams where the time is tight. I ran a program within my company attempting to get many people prepared for the series of exams. The biggest program seems to be time management. As guessing is not penalized, it's not the bad to guess, but you need to be moving at a good rate to cover everything.

As a model user exam, most of the questions (they are all multiple-choice) will be presenting basic simultaneous diagrams and asking you to pick an answer indicating what the diagram means. Sometimes, instead of a diagram it will be term or definition, asking you to pick the definition /term. Generally, you are not going to be asked to distinguish among plausible but incorrect notations (that's for later exams).

If you're a tool user (any tool), you'll find that your tool peculiarities may get in the way. Most tools have additional features, short cuts, work-arounds that are not in the standard. Also you personal or corporate approaches to modeling may be misleading. As an example, some questions may be on the correct fully-qualified name of model elements. Most tools hide that information from you for practical reasons. But you'll need to know things like package and element import and access, even though the tools generally use pick lists and use the correct full names behinds the scenes. We also found that few modelers were familiar, even those with years of UML experience, with the state machine diagrams, because they are used less often in our organization.

The best study source is probably the Sandy Friedenthal (et al) book, A Practical Guide to SysML.

Good Luck

hmm, don't know where the word "simultaneous" came from, probably the spelling checker. Please ignore it.

Michael and Eran,

Thanks for the feedback. We planned to study the Friedenthal text and
the HSUV diagram examples. We are also trying to put together an
informal study guide. The second edition of the Friedenthal text also
has paragraph shading that is supposed to show test 1 and test 2
content.

Will keep you posted. Thanks again for the quick feedback.

Hi MattS
Thanks for the update. I'll be glad to have the test exam question list if
you get them and any additional training material.
I personally learned by reading the standard itself; probably not the best
way. For others in my group, better materials will make them happy.

Thanks
Eran
