Hi,

I am not aware of Eclipse, but Magic Draw has plugin called Cameo Simulation Toolkit, which supports simulation of state-flow and activity and sequence diagrams.

Subject: [SysML Forum] Simulation with sysML

Hi,
I'm a student of industrial engineering, and I  'm doing on a thesis about the modeling of components of hybrid renewable system off-grid  using SysM. I use the software Eclipse with the  plugin  papyrus for SysML. Can you tell me if after modeling the system can perform a simulation ? eclipse allows it? or are there other software that allow it?
Best regards
Giulia

Hi Giulia

Real simulation can be achieved using Rhapsody (license is required).

Good luck; good idea.

A couple of the commercial packages do.  Rhapsody comes to mind as one that simulates the design itself, but there are others (some are mentioned below in Sathya’s email).  Commercial packages can be expensive, but there is a wide range of pricing, and often you can get either a very low price with an academic discount or perhaps even a period of free usage upon request, so don’t rule them out without checking into academic pricing.

If you do a search on “Rational Harmony for Systems Engineering–Best Practices for Model-Based Systems Engineering” or on IBM’s Dr. Hans Peter Hoffmann you should find various of his presentations that discuss this concept, at least briefly.  Here is a link to one of them:

Systems Engineering Best Practices with the Rational Solution ..

https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/files/form/anonymous/api/library/6957c62d-c244-498c-a3d7-7483eaced23d/document/323ce5ac-6fd9-484d-93ce-d1a0eb7ae4f2/media/IBM%20Rational%20Harmony%20Deskbook%20Rel%203.1.2.pdf

(see page 53)

See also:  Case study of model-based systems engineering (MBSE): Part 1. The centralized systems model of IBM Rational Harmony  (also part 2)

In addition, an open source tool called Xholon can execute the state models portion of a UML-based model:  (http://www.primordion.com/Xholon/ )

Lastly, there has been a lot of work coming out of Georgia Tech involving simulations of mechanical systems with a combination of SysML tools and Modelica.  One point of contact is the 11th Annual Conference on Systems Engineering Research (CSER 2013) (http://www.cser13.gatech.edu/ ).

A search on SysML and Modelica should turn up a number of relevant papers like this one:  Simulation-Based Design Using SysML

Part 1: A Parametrics Primer

Peter

You might consider ModelicaML, which is a UML stereotype that can be applied to SysML as well.

https://www.openmodelica.org/index.php/home/tools/134

It is integrated with Papyrus  Eclipse plug-in, and generates Modelica code which can be executed using the OpenModelica Compiler:  https://www.openmodelica.org/index.php/home/tools/135

Artisan Studio as well. We do provide academic licenses as well. Let us know if you would like one and we can arrange one for your university at no charge.

Hi Giulia

Alternatively, you can use OPCAT which runs OPM and is free (Enterprise Systems Modeling Laboratory ) and runs simulation of the system.

Good luck!

Hi Giulia, simulation with Eclipse+Papyrus+Modelica is possible. I've worked with these toos in the past for modeling and simulation of hybrid systems, but they are still in embrional state! I hope that this topic was studied in deep by community.
Send me a mail for more detail.

Check here: http://www.topcased.org/index.php?documentsSynthesis=y&Itemid=59, they have a "simulation" tutorial that might help.
