Hi again, registrars!
The e-mail below was sent today to all U11 coaches and managers - just to give them some history and information on this fun, year-end event. Please feel free to post on your coaches' page should you feel the information is valuable. Thank you!
Hello SYSA U11 Coaches!
Registration is about to open for SYSA’s annual City Tournament. Since most of you have not had a chance to have a team play in the tournament before, we wanted to give you some background on what it is and how it works, and encourage your team to participate.
The SYSA City Tournament is a random draw, double elimination tournament that has been happening each year since 1969. That’s getting close to 50 years! Many of us who’ve had children play on teams that were in the tournament will tell you what a fun, exciting, and memorable event it is for the players and families.
Because the games happen at night during week, it is often the first time young players have a chance to play soccer games under field lights. This creates a unique atmosphere for the kids that makes it special. The open nature of the event, playing teams in a random way that your team may not have played before, creates a nice level of unknown. Games that end in a tie go to a “kicks from the penalty mark” shootout to determine a winner. This also creates a level of excitement that fall league games don’t have.
But don’t just take our word for it. Read the comments sent in by coaches and parents during last year’s tournament on the SYSA web site City Tournament page. Scroll down to the Good of the Game section to get a real flavor of the fun and excitement.
The tournament brackets are fun to track, as each team keeps playing until they lose two games. For 2017, we are creating two divisions so that teams in less competitive brackets (Bronze, lower Silver) will have a better chance of success against more evenly matched opponents. SYSA will even allow guest players, within guidelines, to help teams that lose players to the events happening in December, which sometimes keeps teams from signing up.
The cost of the tournament is a very reasonable $125. Some clubs – Ballard, Beacon Hill, Magnolia, McGilvra, Queen Anne, Shorelake (and West Seattle) – even pay the registration fee for any teams that want to sign up. The first games begin Monday night, November 27, and the Championship Games, for those teams that make it until the end, is Saturday, December 16.
We strongly encourage your team to participate in this amazing event. You’ll be creating memories that will some of the best and most lasting you’ll have as a soccer coach!
Thank you!
