Please see the e-mail below, send last Friday to all coaches. It outlines the changes that are new to this year for multiple divisions, and guest player participation.
Hello SYSA U11 and older team coaches,
SYSA has made some modifications to the annual City Tournament for this year that we wanted to share. We are excited about these changes! We think they will enhance the tournament and make it more fun and exciting for more teams and players.
Our goal with these changes is to encourage and entice more teams to sign up. The SYSA City Tournament is one of the great legacies of our association, starting play in 1969 (!!) and continuing without break since then. We want to make sure that the tournament continues until its 50th Anniversary in 2019!
Two Divisions at Younger Ages
Beginning in 2017, we will be having two bracket divisions whenever possible (based on number of teams) at U11, U12, U13, and U14. The division will be based on fall division placement. Teams that played in the fall Gold Division, and finished in the top half of Silver Division, will be placed in the City Tournament Division 1. Teams in the bottom half of Silver, and in the Bronze Division, will be placed in Division 2. We believe this addition of a second bracket will give less competitive fall teams a better chance of success in the tournament. It will also give the more competitive teams more challenges.
Each division will have its own bracket, and the same random draw and double-elimination rules apply. Both divisions will have their own trophy (we’ll have to buy some new ones!), and there will be a Tournament Championship Finals game for both divisions. We’ll have a lot more teams hoisting trophies and playing in exciting Finals games this year on December 16th!
Guest Players on Team Tournament Rosters
This year, teams will be allowed to add players previously registered for fall SYSA play to their roster. This will enable teams that may not have a deep enough roster for the tournament to add some players that will allow them to join the tournament. To be sure, there are rules and guidelines for these guest players so that coaches can’t stack teams, and players can’t switch teams. But we believe that a good number of teams each year miss out on the tournament because some of their players are unable to participate (we realize it is a busy time of the year for families). This will also allow a player whose team is not in the tournament to participate by playing on another team.
Players can be added to a team as a guest player under the following rules:
· The player must have been registered with SYSA before October 15. No adding guest players who register after that date.
· The player cannot switch to a different team if the fall team is already playing in the tournament.
· A team must have at least a minimum number of players on the roster before it can begin adding players (meaning the team should be mostly intact before signing up for the tournament).
· A team cannot add guest players if they already have a maximum number of players (meaning a team cannot bulk up with additional players just to make the team stronger).
· All guest players added to a team will be approved by a committee of SYSA staff and board to ensure fairness.
· All tournament team rosters must be final by November 9 (to give us time to create the schedules).
