Hello SYSA Coaches,
Beginning this week, we hope to send you a weekly email with information about the Citywide League. We promise to keep the emails short and to the point. If you have thoughts about things we should cover,
please send them to us at infor...@sysa.org , or call 206-552-0723.
This week, we’d like to focus on three things: Game Day Rosters, Referee Evaluations, and Substitute Referees
Game Day Rosters
Each coach should bring three printed copies of the team roster to each game.
The roster is a way for coaches and referees to make sure all players on the opposing team are registered. We frequently get complaints and comments from a coach that their opponent had a Seattle United or other
unregistered or select player on their team. We can avoid these concerns if each coach brings their printed roster to each game, and gives them to the referee and the opposing coach before the game.
- Instructions for printing your roster can be found on the SYSA web site,
at
this link. The instructions for roster printing, and other important information, can be found in the Coaches Handbook,
on the Schedules page at
this link.
- Print three copies of your roster for each game, and give one to the referee, and one to the opposing coach.
- Protesting a Game -- If the opposing coach does not have a printed roster, you can inform the referee and the coach that you are playing the game
under protest. If you do this, and SYSA finds out subsequently that your opponent played an unregistered player, the game results can be overturned, and penalties assessed on the other team.
- The rules for protesting a game are in section 8.2 of the SYSA Rules of Competition,
at
this link. Please note that to protest a game you must inform the referee and other coach before leaving the field.
Referee Evaluations
All coaches, parents, and players need to show respect to game referees during play. Shouting at a referee, harassing them, and disagreeing with calls in a vocal manner is not modeling good, Honor the
Game behavior. If you believe a referee has not performed well, you can submit an evaluation of the referee online after the game. These evaluations are carefully read
and used to improve performance by the Seattle Soccer Referees Association.
Substitute Referees in Case of a No Show
There are not enough referees in Seattle to cover all the games being played. If a referee does not show up at your game, it is most likely because no one was available to referee the game, not because
the referee assigned did not come.
In the event of a referee not being assigned to or appearing at your game, here are the SYSA guidelines for what to do.
- The SYSA Rules of Competition, 5.2, state that the lack of a referee should not be cause to cancel a match.
- Both coaches should agree on any substitute referees for the game.
- The Seattle Referees recommend that a parent or sibling be chosen to referee.
- Each team can provide someone to referee one half of the game to provide a measure of fairness.
Thanks for all you do for the kids in SYSA!
