Cari frater et sorer!

It seems to me that we have accumulated a pretty impressive body of knowledge regarding Syntheism here on the list and on the forums. Not just in regard to philosophy, The activity at The Syntheist Node and related Burn events have addressed some interesting practial challanges and solutions. However, to actually find this knowledge online takes quite a bit of searching and scrolling. I think it is due time that we try to condense these ideas into something more tangible. A new book on Syntheism needs be written. Let's make an anthology!

An anthology would not only be an excellent addition to the main theoretical framework of Syntheism laid out in the book by our dear brothers Bard and Söderqvist. It would also be a scripture in line with our quest for emergent truth through participatory processes. While each chapter and subject will give an interesting perspective on different aspects of syntheology, it is the metanarrative that will guide our future pursuits. Hopefully giving rise to a more concrete and coherent belief system, moral maxims and codes of conduct. For me personally, it is about finding an answer to the question: what does it mean to be a Syntheist?

The good thing about anthologies are that they can be added on ad infinitum as new volumes gets written. For each volume, different authors could contribute with their own particular insights, building on previous chapters or break new grounds, thus, creating a living religious canon. The content of each volume and the subject of each contribution is of course a matter of discussion. My view is that it should cover all aspects of religion, from the highest metaphysical abstraction to the most mundane experiences. Some suggestions would be: consciousness and the problem of other minds, chivalry in the modern age, how to greet community members, daily rituals for the masses, the meaning of dietary restrictions, and taking a shit like a Syntheist.

I think it would be fun if we started by deciding on a set of umbrella topics that we think need some elaboration in relation to Syntheist theory and practice. Voluteering authors would then get to work on their choosen topics and present the result in a feedback group mailing list to refine the work. Another alternative is that all authors write in Google docs with their documents open to comments by anyone with the link. It would of course be up to the author to change according to or disregard the comments. The aim with this appraoch is to create an open authoring space where the community members can have insight and opportunity to influence the ideas put forward. A head curator would then choose the most relevant articles for the first volume and compose the end product together with the illustrators and graphical designers of the community. As instigator I nominate myself as curator and project leader of the first volume.

How we should fund the project is another issue to be solved. A kickstarter campaign seem like the most reasonable option to get the actual book in print. Authors, illustrators and curators alike work pro bono until royalties can be paid according to some reasonable rate. How much is a discussion to be had with a potential publisher further down the line. In best case we start our own Syntheistic publishing company! But let's not get ahead of ourselves. ;)

Other suggestions are of course welcome. As said, this should be a collaborative effort from seed to oak tree. I think we got the proper talant and connections to make this a splendid piece of modern philosophy!

Dear Denys

Funnily enough I have just had conversations with multiple people over the past two weeks about doing exactly this - coordinating the writing of a syntheist anthology. I think the idea is fantastic, the timing is great as a publication like this is sorely needed, and I think that your framing and approach to the project is spot on.

Personally I would focus an anthology on bringing syntheism to a broader audience, bringing the philosophical considerations into a more practical and applied approach. This could be through taking up some case studies of syntheistic religions and how they are practiced and illustrating how the role of religion in society has been disregarded. I particularly think that there is an opportunity to describe communities and organisations which are consciously working with what I would call "21st century spirituality", focused on working with the sacredness of realising human potential in collaborative communities which are fully integrated into mainstream society.

I would love to collaborate with and support you in this project and am looking forward to driving to the Nordic Mens Gathering with you next week, where I am sure that we can take this idea further!

Love, Paul

YES, YES, YES!!!
I absolutely love this project. Totally for it.
And the fact that both Denys and Paul have taken the initiative separately from each other but simultaneously just proves that the time has come for this to happen.
Please feel most welcome to use this mailing list as the forum where the project is developed. It should be perfect for it.
Big love

Excellent! Feels good to have you guys on board.

Me and Paul have a 7 hour car drive to NMG next week. It would be an great opportunity to brainstorm. I had a feeling that this was brewing, not just in my head and I would be happy to collaborate.

In the mean time we can use this thread to pitch different topics and titels to get the creative juices flowing.

I'd love to write a piece on modern chivalry and the importance of creating a solid moral structure to counter nihilsm, without resorting to fundamentalism. I have some loose ideas that I'm currently trying to tie together and would appriciate any input on the topic. The main idea is that we humans need a personal Jesus, as well as a personal Satan to act righteous. The battle of good and evil inherent in the human psychology. We can't excape that, merely clad it in different concepts. For some it is litterally the antagonism between Jesus/Satan, for others it is democracy/dictatorship, marxism/capitalism, Buddha/Samsara, feminism/patriarchy, culture/nature, and so on. The Syntheist approach then, would be to acknowledge this metadichotomy and find your own inner savior/nemesis. I'm inspired by Aleister Crowley's definition of the Holy Guardian Angel, the Greek Genius or the psychoanalytical ego-ideal, which could be described as the sum totale of your accumulated knowledge. This is your unconscious mind working at its optimal level and transmitting this wisdom to your consious mind through some mean. Asking "what would Jesus/Buddha/Batman do?" is to invoke this Holy Guardian Angel and to act upon its words is to do your own True Will™. However, what would be a suitable and progressive enemy is still something that I ponder.

And I'm dead serious about the title "Taking a Shit Like A Sytheist"! While I'm not really up for the task of writing it myself I think there is something truly Syntheistic about concept of Shitopia which have visited several of the recent Scandinavian Burns. To so openly address and make meaningful the act of excretion by creative collaboration is to me mindblowing. It is the brown eye in the triangle of LNT, Radical Self-Expression and Communal Effort. As the Subgenius say, "excremeditaion is the true way to enlightenment". Haha! Damn, maybe I do wanna write about this after all...

Regarding format of the book, I'm torn between a free form collection of texts (from fairytales and fables to hard data crunching) and a more "academic" piece. The former is definitely more fun, but risk becoming too straggly, the latter could end up just boring for non-initiates. Perhaps we all just start by writing whatever comes to mind and we can decide when we got something to work with. In any case, I fully agree with Paul that all texts should be aimed at a broader audience. Let's make this baby grow!

Love this. What I seen the need for and wished for. First I would love to offer my contribution to be a guardian for the form of the text with the intention to aim a broader audience.

And I will keep asking if there is something else I can contribute with in this process and babyprojekt.

I like the way the Church of the Spaghetti monster has released books. They have a forum (brainstorming forum) and then a publishing house. The publishing house puts out books and generates money, that pays for what needs paying for.

The books they put out are well written because they've employed proper writers. The amateur works (in the forum) generates ideas that can inspire the authors. But there's no committee on how to do stuff. There's an editorial board (headed by one person, Bobby Henderson). It's success if of course down to the fact that the FSM was first conceived by a writer, Bobby Henderson.

Syntheism is a similar kind of "organisation". If it works for them it'll work for us. It's a good model to use.

My heart also flutters with enthusiasm for this... We're also planning a "Metamodernism" anthology over at the Perspectiva-Metamoderna axis, under the leadership of Jonthan Rowson and Tomas Björkman.

I may not be able to contribute substantially due to my own book writing (for those who don't know me, I write the Hanzi series of metamodernism books togetehr with Emil Ejner Friis, see more at: http://metamoderna.org/). But i am very curious about how this could turn out.

I'd like to stress at an early point that we must make sure this becomes co-creation in the best sense: higher quality, higher demands. We must be very strict with the quality demands and that may require some tough leadership on your part, whoever takes the lead on this one.

Hi!
Great initiative! I have two ideas I would like to contribute - one is a more philosophical take on what kind of societal and theological consequences this mode of religious expression and theology may have. I have written quite a bit about that at my subsecular.com already.
Secondly, I collected empirical data at Urban Burn Sthlm regarding what the ppl of the burner community in Sthlm is dreaming of, what kind of society they'd like to see emerge from all this that we're doing. I think that will be quite interesting as well.

I'll for sure keep a close eye on what happens and am really up for being on board!

Jonatan and Fanny would be great contributors - word!
And while I have already written extensively on Syntheism with Jan Söderqvist already, and would love other voices to be heard here, there is a serious deep shit text I have written with Hampus Lindblad on Spirituality and Psychedelics that was written outside of the "Syntheism" book with Söderqvist but could possibly fit perfectly for this anthology project.
The Syntheism mailing list is perfect for the development of this amazing project.

Love having you on board Daniel, Jonathan and Fanny! Looking forward to read more about your ideas. That Urban Burn study seem at first glance absolutetly perfect for this kind of pop-syntheology relase.

And your suggestion is spot on, Tom Knox! It's obviously the way to go. This should indeed be a professional work. Also, I know you have experience and hope that you will contribute as well!

I'm more and more drawn to the idea that this should be a pretty light and fun read. Not overtly complex and pondering, even though some subjects will unquestionably be deep. Our community is a quirky, silly and humourus bunch, the book should reflect this rather than the abysmal depth and seriousness that often pertains to philosophical works. While complexity is exciting for esoteric circles, this is an exoteric missionary piece. Naturally, we write what we write and this is not ment as a decree of any kind. Just something to have in mind. :)

I already have a whole bunch of texts on practical applications of
Syntheism. Both published and non-published. To me religion is
primarily something you do, rather than believe in. That's something I
like to write about.

Something I am also very interested in is writing/creating a
Syntheistic mythos. An easy to read, allegorical tale. Something like
the Wizard of Oz, Ovid's Metamorphoses or Snorre's Edda. It should be
an exiting, clever and fun read, while also giving examples of
practical applications of modern philosophy. I've been working on this
for years, but basically only produced complete garbage so far. It's
hard! Collaborators or just somebody to take a very critical editors
role, is welcome.

Ideas that I've thrown around are modern morality tales where the
moral lessons is to not think of the world as good/evil,
black/white... but that reality/truth is usually a lot more messy. I
guess the moral message I want to convey is that winning at life means
staying flexible, open and curious. Rather than following any rigid
dogma. Perhaps something a modern myth against common sense, and for
scientific inquiry. So a science propaganda piece. The message being
something about human brain failures/perception biases.

Short stories of the above vein, I think would work great great in an
anthology. Lighter short stories to break up heavier sections. Or a
separate one all together. But I clearly need help.

I can write. And I've already had books published. So that's a start.

Hmmm, maybe we should check with Olivia Solon.
Because if she knew what we are up to, we would certainly be part of that story too.
Levandowski is a Google nerd who wants to personify The Singularity, which is Syntheos through and through.
Anybody who wants to reach out and recruit him here?
However he is not writing books and building congregations around his idea.
And neither will robots for the foreseeable future.

Chu is an echonomist that was key in saving the life of General Motors in 2008. He is now at the World Bank.

Cari frater et sorer!

Just got back from the fantastic Nordic Men’s Gathering, filled with libido and phallic creativity! Building strong independent brother- and sisterhoods I believe is one of the most important keys to a wholesome and healthy movement. We gonna see more of this I assure you.

In regard to the anthology, me and Paul discussed it a bit in the car on the way up to the Gathering and came to the following conclusion: The working title is ”Practical Syntheism - A Field Guide” and the umbrella topic of the book is Experience. Not just any experience, but something that the author believe is crucial knowledge for the community. The text should be centered in the Now, drawing from past Experiences to solve problems in the Future. More theoretical inquiries could be fine as long as they are anchored in real-world issues, or at least have some practical implications. The questions that nees to be answered is:

What was the problem?
How was it solved?
Why is this important knowlegde for future challenges?

By doing so, we get a red thread going through the book while still leaving room for personal style and creativity. The subjective topic could be small or big, philosophical or hands-on. I’m even considering if this allows for a wider array of mediums such as text, comics, artwork etc. as long as it answers the fundamental questions. Perhaps we can experiment with it a bit and see what material comes out.

While the end product is going to be a professional piece, I do not want to put off any aspiring writers or creators that wants to contribute. Rather, this could be an opportunity to actually develop that creative skill with the help of the feedback from the community. If you have something important that needs to be said then go ahead! It’s better we have an abundance of material to work with.

Further thought and feedback to this framework is very welcome!

Phileo,
Denys Zagreus

Hi Denys!
Good to hear that the Men's Gathering was a strengthening experience!

Regarding the frame - I think both my possible contributions would land outside this frame. So if the framework is strictly on "what _was_ the problem and how _was_ it solved" rather than an opening for on "what _is_ the problem and how are we to solve it (ala why is syntheism the answer" I think not only can I not contribute. It also risks the potential of utopias that is deeply embedded in theological thinking - syntheist utopias included.

So, I'd need to know: Is that kind of piece not interesting for this volume. Then, unfortunately, I would be out. Which I would rather not be.

Well, if your definition of what the problem _is_ is accurate and based on lived experience (or empiricism) rather than through armchair anthropologism, then I see no problem. Your data collection at the Urban Burn sounds just as something that would fit this book brilliantly. How Syntheistically inclined people percieve utopia and what they do to get there is a great topic. Given your data, could you answer the questions? Just wanted to let you know that I have now commenced writing my contributing chapter to the volume. Really interesting stuff in the accounts my empirical respondents give, and I think it's possible to frame in a way that makes very much sense in terms of (what kind of solution does syntheism present).

Just wanted to give you an update regarding this!
Are there any deadlines set?

/Jonatan

Fantastic! I’m really looking forward to reading it.

Regarding deadline. As the response rate has been fairly low I think we’ll take it slow and let the idea accumulate for a while. There is no stress in getting it published and I want high quality material. I suggest we set 1st of March as a deadline for first drafts. By then we should have some more concrete material to work with which will give us an overview that will help us set the direction. Then we’ll know what is the next step.

Phileo,
Denys Zagreus

I would suggest that we agree on an overall theme, message or at least framework for the anthology before we go too much further. The message of the book will be a lot more aligned if we are all writing within a specific agreed upon direction than what has been defined rather sporadically and randomly in this thread. Denys, I suggest that the two of us take a chat about this next week?
