So Brian invited me to a Shift Vegas meeting tuesday tonight. Shift Vegas is a group of people that are passionate about something and want to create a community around that and Shift downtown to more of a community. It really gave me and idea of what Tony Hsieh and the Downtown Project are trying to do.
I know a lot of people are afraid of getting sucked into "Drinking the Punch". In reality I thing we are very aligned with what the group is trying to create with downtown.
My perception before the meeting was: Zappos is throwing a bunch of money at downtown to "revitalize" it. I think I got this spin from the media and how they have portrayed it.
In reality and what I got from the meeting is: Tony Hsieh (not Zappos), through the Downtown Project, is trying to create a sense of community downtown that brings like minds together and in the process revitalizes downtown.
As for a summery of the meeting. What has been know as "The Arts Center" the space at 9th and Bridger now known as "9th Bridge" is very solid at this point. In fact there is going to be a workshop Sunday to start the conversation on how to design the space and break it up. We are being invited in on that process. I think this is our first stepping stone. We may not align completely with what the space is trying to accomplish, but we can help the space get going, and get our name and what we do out to this new community.
I hope that more people can go to these meeting and see the passion that everyone has in creating a better sense of community in Las Vegas. We seem to be the group that is the furthest along. I think we are clearing the path for other groups to follow at this point. Lets not stray too far away from the Downtown Project it can be mutually beneficial to us and them. Lets JFDI.
